Redirects and Domains for SEO

Does anyone know if redirects affects SEO? For example, if you own a company like Biking and Fitness Inc., located in Maryland and own a domain name, for example, bikingmaryland.com and bikingandfitness.com. Would pointing your domain name (via a URL redirect) bikingmaryland.com to bikingandfitness.com boost your bikingandfitness.com site for the keyword biking maryland? Or does it hurt your rankings? Or does it have no affect on the rankings?

I was thinking that if it does help, then why not buy 20 keyword domain names like biking(cityname).com and point all of them to bikingandfitness.com to boost your rankings for all 20 keywords? It would be a strange way of linkbuilding, but if it works, it might be worth it. Thoughts?

    Well,

first this might be the wrong sub-forum.

But there is no point in purchasing a number of fresh domains without any PR or backlinks, what "juice" should flow to the site from those empty and new domains?

Different story if you would redirect from established domains.

Sorry, wasn't sure which one to put this question in. I was just wondering if the exact match keyword domain would help the main site to rank for that keyword, that's all.

I recently did this, though in my case it was 301 redirecting a domain I had bought from someone that actually already had rankings to a site I was running. Basically in cases where that redirected domain was ranking, my site was now in its place. From that, I would at least guess that the SEO juice from the redirected domain would combine with the SEO juice of the site it's going to.

Having said that, while a brand new domain would probably have nothing to offer, if it's an exact match of a term you're trying to rank for, I wouldn't be surprised if a 301 redirect to your site might see it eventually rank for that term. I honestly don't know if it would or wouldn't though.
