Ok so i have about 5 sites with tons of blog comments on them waiting for my approval. The problem is, most of them are complete spam and unrelated to my niche.

However, I can edit the comments... Does this help with SEO?

If those comments are mostly completely spam and unrelated to your blog post, then better not to approve them. It wouldn't help with SEO accepting comments like that. If the comments are related to your blog posts, then that will be fine. Good thing you moderate your comments. That's a good thing!

Ok but what if the comments are related to my post? Does this help with SEO?

It might help a little bit by adding some freshness to an already existing page. Besides that I don't see much benefit.

Yeah I read in a couple places its considered fresh content by the spiders, so they reindex you more often. As to whether or not it helps your SERPS is another question. Thanks.

            Hi rvrabel2002,

Adding useful information to your blog is generally a good thing. If the comment provides useful information, and it's relevant to your blog readers, then it will be beneficial to approve the comment. Conversely, approving spam or comments that don't provide value to your readers may do your blog harm. It is really that simple.

Well, as far as related comments are concern then you should welcome those comments and can add you comment with respect to that comments with some better updates you know about as, like this you can share some updates with them. but, if you are getting comments that are not that much beneficial for you then it is better to remove them.

        Thanks

if the comments are nothing but links then, don't do it...but if you really wanna take the time to edit all those comments, into somewhat relate-able text than go for it, just make sure you no-follow the comment links

If the link is completely irrelevant (your site is about motorcycles and the link is about sushi), that will make you link out to irrelevant sites. This will hurt SEO because now you are telling YOUR site to Google that your site is about motorcycles and sushi. You will rank lower in the SERPs for motorcycles because your site is not 100% about motorcycles. Google wants the most relevant sites on first page.

I dont accept comments only pingbacks and trackbacks

You can get some good backlinks this way and dont need to spend too long monitoring comments for spam.
