Is pinging effective? I ping all my new blogs but not really sure if they do anything. Its just the press of a button so not a big deal but are all these sites indexing my blogs for real?

Not "indexing" your sites, just notifying the spiders to come by and check out your site. Depending on what they find on your site depends on if anything good will come.

    I can be good thing.

It does have effect on how fast your new pages are indexed. Whenever I have new content, pinging (I use either pingoat.net or pingler.com) helps the SE find and index the page faster (usually within hours). Otherwise I have wait for days if no pinging is done.

@VegasGreg: Thanks for clearing that up.

@abelacts: Automation is the key for faster pinging.

Most blogs have auto ping on new content, if you ping more than once a week it can actually hurt you almost like crying wolf. You don't update anything and ping over and over and it starts having a negative effect. But is good to crawl links. For re-indexing best thing is xml sitemaps

  • Unless you have disabled pinging on your blog, it should already be pinging the search engines each time you post new content.

Pinging the engines on your own is pretty much worthless. If your blogging software like WordPress pinged them when you originally made your post then they have likely either already crawled your post or have it queued up to be crawled. If they visited your site because of the ping and didn't index it, then pinging them again is likely only going to yield the same result.

Was it Eistien that said repeating the same action expecting different results was the definition of insanity?

If you have no better way of getting a post indexed than pinging the search engines repeatedly then you have much larger problems and much more important things you could be spending your time doing.
