Google page #1 - what's needed?

I'm wanting to get some opinions on what the most important factors are for
landing on page #1 of Google.

From my own experience, I would say that an exact match domain name is the most important factor, but I don't know how to rate the other factors, such as backlinks, quality or size of website, competition, etc.

Any thoughts this morning?

Well, you hit many of them.
But you have keywords, tags, backlinks, linking out to high PR sites, bookmarking, competition, etc...many different things can affect it.

Lots of good free info out there on SEO also.

I think the only one to know the true answer to your question is Google.

Try them all and see what works best.

I managed to get on page one of Google for "press release writer." Here are some of the factors: My site is called www.thepressreleasesite.com so the website name is clearly relevant. I have a LOT of blog posts on there which talk about publicity, press releases, how to write a press release, etc. And I tweeted a lot of links to my press release blog posts, which ended up with a lot of people linking back to my site because I make sure that I have good info and resources on there.

Also - age of site. My site's about two years old now, which helps.

Dana has a great point. I have found that The title is so much more important then anything else. In fact if you can have your web address as your niche then you will be tackling half the battle , the other half is social networking sites. Getting single lined backlinks, content updates and comments on your blog as well as optimizing your page to have other people send your content out.

Okay, from the replies so far, I'm getting the impression that:

      1. if I'm pressed for time, so that I have to use it very wisely,

      2. and I already have an exact match domain name, which is also my title and
      url,

      3. and even though I have average to high competition, and my content is not the greatest, but not the worst, either, then....

      3. the most useful thing for me for me to do is focus on backlinks.

      Correct?

For me it would be a well balanced backlink campaign. Rinse and repeat.

Anchor text, and page title are the two most important.

Next lots of fresh relevant content which google seems to love.

Domain name has very little bearing in google. Helps in Bing/Yahoo more. Although may help CTR.

I'm curious as to what you base that statement on - about the domain name having very little bearing in Google. It goes against all the advice that I've heard, and also against what I've observed personally. I'm not saying you're right or wrong, I was just wondering where you got the info from.

        Hi Cath,

I use the 60%-30%-10% rule when backlinking.

60% of my backlinks are my chosen keyword phrase. (eg: Make Money Online)
30% of my backlinks are a derivative of it. ( eg: Money Making Online)
10% is the actual url of the page being backlinked. (eg:hllp://www.makemoneyonline.co.uk)

I have seen exact domain works well for me but only for small niche websites where the competition is not too high. But the most important factor would be following a good link building strategy. It's all about backlinks.

EMD (exact match domain) IS good assuming that the rest of the site is good also....but its really not a guarantee.

What is the most important factor?

    1) Keyword research IN ADVANCE to determine whether you have a realistic chance to rank in the first place. IF...then its only a matter of time and patience.

    2) On-site stuff like good categories, good content...is "quite" important

    3) TIME, PATIENCE and CONSISTENCY

You simply dont rank "over night", and if you do its temporary and you will likely drop as fast also.

They key is CONSISTENT dedication to a site, dont make a site and forget it. Keep it fresh, you dont need content EVERY day but at least occasionally add content if you can. Add good, unique content.

Look at your site and think like YOUR OWN site visitor. The better the impression you have of your own site, the more likely is is that Google will like the site also.

Build links, deep link over SEVERAL MONTHS, never stop. Social bookmark, blog comment, etc..etc.. hire some people for getting qualtity links...etc.. Link to long tail keywords, add long tail keyword targeting articles to your site.

Good content with nicely distributed main and LSI keyword, plus the right kind of backlinks (authority backlinks withh the righht contextual information suchh as thhe ancor text in the link matching with the main keyword or some LSI keyword).

Domain name probably helps but then, there will be only 1 page that will have the exact domain name as the keyword and maybe a few other pages that will contain the keyword in the domain name, but do you really see that in all the pages that are in the Google first page of your domain? Something for you to figure out... But it is good to have (some part of) the keyword apper in your complete URL if getting the domain name is difficult. By the way, also make sure that the competition on the first page for your chosen term is something that you can beat with your armour. Some keywords are overtly competitive.

Domain name is not that important actually. The most important factor is sites linking back to your site with good anchor text.

The 3 important factors for ranking high on search engines are:
    1. Content (Quality & Uniqueness)
    2. Keywords Usage (Density, Keywords as Anchor Text)
    3. Backlinks (Preferably from Relevant and High PR sources)

Optimize the page for a specific keyword or phrase and get lots of backlinks using the keyword or phrase as anchor text and you'll get good ranking.

There are many factors such as content, competition, keywords, links, time, domain, and everything in between. There is not one thing in one niche, it is always different.
