What question is a Black Hat question?

I sell various herbal seeds online and wish to promote it on the footer of my friend's video production company website. Is this allowed? Or is it 'Black hat' to promote links of totally unrelated sites? Will someone throw light on this please...

You can do it but will not have a good effect, unless he has very high traffic. Relevancy is not there but can get some juice if his page rank is high. I would not do it unless the traffic is good. It will hurt his website on next update.

It's certainly not black hat, but it won't be of any use probably. People interested in video production are not likely to also be interested in herbal seeds.

  Well, some video production people I've met seem to have an interest in certain herbal products...
  
  But, to get to the question, no, there's no problem with this. However, sitewide footer links and other links outside of the primary textual content (sidebars, etc) tend to be discounted by Google so don't expect much from these.
