Is there even a point to Directory Submitting?

I know it was "all the buzz" back for a while, but do people still bother with directory submissions?

I heard the SEs dont really value them anymore since they are basically just spam fests, and I doubt much natural traffic comes flowing through them.

Sure there's the argument of backlinks, but the value cant be that great, sure the main page of the site might be PR 4,5,6...but the page with our links listed on it will most likely be a big ol No PR page.

Thoughts? Who still uses Directories and state that the use of directories helped their rankings?

so thanks to directory submitting your sites became PR3?

      How many submissions tho?
How many show up in your backlinks and what kind of PR do the pages have?

I still use directory submissions (although I outsource the work because it is boring and tedious) and although the backlinks don't carry much weight, they do carry some.

In regards to getting backlinks and PR and SE status, you can either go for getting a couple high PR backlinks or hundreds (sometimes 1000's) of low PR backlinks. It really depends on how much work you want to do. Blackhats typically go after low quality backlinks in bulk and manage to get to the front page of whatever they are gunning for, albeit a temporary one.

Still, building PR by submitting to a couple hundred directory sites does work and isn't that hard.

It's still a good supplemental back link but don't realy on it alone. Related-page back link should be the priority.

I only submit my sites to the top directories because I once submitted a site to 1000+ directories but even after 1 year, I only see 14 backlinks coming from those directories.

High PR directories are better, I think should be from PR4.

I still use them as part of my overall linking strategy, but they are not nearly as important as they used to be. I spend maybe an hour or two every month and that is all on directories.

They are still worth submitting to. You wont get any referals from the crappy ones but you can get quite a few back links. I've built some good page rank on all my sites from just a one off submission to 1000 crappy directories. I outsource that bit then focus on the real link building with articles etc.

          Hi Dexx,

Yes, submitting to directories is still good. That said, not all directories are equal. Personally, I consider most directories not worth the time it takes to submit.

If you pick and choose directories wisely then you will get more impact from your efforts. For me the number one priority in choosing a directory is how relevant the page I will be listed on is to my website.

Almost as important is how much traffic does the directory and especially the page my listing will be on, receive. If it gets little or no targeted traffic then it's not worth my time.

While some folks may disagree, I put very little weight on the PR of the directories home page. I believe that a directories home page PR means absolutely nothing. I believe targeted traffic is the only true measure of the value of a link. That pretty green bar distracts all my competitors to my extreme delight.

What kind of Page Rank have you been able to achieve?

I appreciate all the feedback guys, and I'm sure other users searching for similar answers do to!

Any other experiences and results to share?

The highest page rank i have had from directory submissions alone is a 4 but normally I get a PR 2.

and that's from just directory submission.

What about times when you've combined directory submissions with article submission etc.

How long did it take you hit that PR level? How did it affect your rankings in SEs?

        Hi,

we have in the past used both directory submissiob, paid submission & link exchanges & backlinks, this was free & paid, it just resulted in PR3 & slightly improves SE position but doesnt give any wonderful results & no great change either.

its very time consuming, tedious & for the amount of work you have to do the result isnt there.

It does help to submit to directories, but make sure the link text and descriptions vary, and you focus your submission to high pr directories.

With everything SEO, variety and "natural" link building methods are the key.

Directory submission matters a lot...a link is a link and directories gives us a lot of links.
