Beating those shopping sites!

Im sure most of us have come across the giant shopping sites when trying to rank our sites, you know the ones im talking about - amazon, nextag, overstock, target - there are several.

Im looking for peoples experiences on how much backlinking it took to beat them.

In particular, in one niche im facing up against a sub page of overstock: PR 3, 15 backlinks in yahoo site explorer (all of those links being pr n/a or 0 from other micro sites obviously trying to provide outbound links on their own sites so they dont look MFA )

The on page SEO is classic overstock - not much text, but the keyword is in the title, and url. Wanted to anticipate how much effort will be required on my part, as the niche is VERY juicy, 150k exact searches per month, CPC $1.50 and very commercial. I also managed to snag the exact match domain.

To pre-empt some likely responses - im aware that there is no exact number, etc etc im just looking for a rough feel from other peoples experiences of beating these types of sites.

Such things are notoriously hard to predict, don't listen if people offer you guesswork, it can end up being wildly off base. Just do whatever it takes. An exact match domain should give you a head start, but it's no magic bullet. How competitive is the keyword? Besides the number of results and intitle: stats, consider these metrics: what position are you in how, and how long did it take you to reach it with a KID website? If you shot up to second position overnight, you're in good shape; if you are still beyond page 2, things are likely to be to be tough. But remember, it is ultimately a matter of quality backlinks, on-site optimization pays a small part by comparison.

How many internal links does it have and the PR of those internal pages etc. Remember internal links count more in Google then Yahoo... This is how the big boys rank a lot of the times
