I'm ranking 1st in G's SERPs for a highly competitive keyword phrase that is supposed to have 2400 monthly searches yet I'm only getting about 15 impressions per day at best. What's the deal?

2400 searches/month is NOT a lot. Take into account that those nrs. returned by google might not be exact and that not EVERYONE searching would actually go on your site...so 15 impressions/day is very likely i am afraid.

If there really are 2400 searches a month at best your No.1 position should generate you between 30-60 clicks per day.

Try tweeking your title tag and description tag to make your advert more compelling to your audiance.

    I hope this helps...

Yes, that isn't a huge number, is that the phrase match figure? 2400? The actual phrase you are ranking for may be lower!

Also, be sure to be logged out of gmail when you check as Google has the history thing, so where it seems you are number 1, you may not actually be at number 1!

First, make sure your search results are not personalized. Use a rank checker and/or proxy sites to confirm. Also, check google trends to figure out when these searches are occuring. It is possible that there are 30000 searches all in November and December, which would even out to about 2400 per month.

If it is exactly having 2400 visitors per month, you should get at least 50/60 visitors per day.Are you sure that the Keyword in "EXACT" match generate those number of visitors? And are you sure that your site in no 1 in every domain.I mean Google in USA, UK, INDIA, RUSSIA like wise.

First try to know the best country that the visitors are coming for that keyword. And check whether your site comes in the position 1 in that country in Google?

The answer would be NO for sure.Just find those details first.I'm sure that you have made a mistake in some of those points.

      Hey,

Do you use Market Samurai? If not, you should... And turn it on Exact match and examine the SEOT number.

2,400 searches / mon even if that is on exact is only going to translate to about...

480 hits per month to your site, which is only realistically going to be about 16 hits / impressions per day.

      2,400 * 20% (Realistic traffic %) = 480 / 30 = 16 /day

I'd say your 15/day number is just about perfect.

The keywords may be highly competitive and you may get those traffic to your site which is quite estimated figure. Is your keywords is short keywords or long-tail keywords? If it is later, then that might be a reason for less impressions.

Long tail keywords are actually the easiest to tell the correct number of searches per month.

Let's say for example I've going for the keyword "travel deals" .. and It gets .. 1,880,000 searches on Phrase match.. if I turn that down to Exact it only gets 15,000 because it's an extremely short keyword.

People can type in "travel deals florida", "travel deals atlanta", add ANY city or state, or country on the end of that Phrase.

However, let's say I found a 4 word long tail keyword like "wireless high definition antenna" (not real) and it gets 40,000 / month on Phrase result.

Since the keyword is 4 words, the Exact match should be almost the same amount of searches per month.

Wireless high definition antenna is long tail enough that there's really nothing else to type along with it besides a model or brand.

If you saw the 2400 search results in google adwords keyword tool, then that is not the right figure.Google adwords keyword tool donot give the accurate figue.Try searching that keyword in wordtracker and see how much searches it gets, then you will get an accurate figure

Try aiming to increase the SERP's for other pages on your websites as well. Maybe work towards a niche within the niche.

You've learnt a great lesson today. Big up yourself and move onto your next project.
(There will be longtail keywords that you've missed. Try to work those out. Try geographical.)

2400 EXACT global search volume is good enough for niche site. But you also have to take a look at EXACT LOCAL search volume for the previous month. I also had a great rank site with about 2900 EXACT global search volume but I always got 0 - 1 visitor. After I recheck I always got 0 for EXACT LOCAL search volume for the previous month.

Always look at them both. Then have a look at the graphic trends.

I usually see about 40% of the Exact search volume numbers in traffic to my pages that are in the #1 ranking spot. That would be about twice what you're reporting. So my guess is that it's one of two things:

    1. Your title and description aren't doing the job to convince people to click.

    2. The search numbers are skewed for this time of year and there really aren't that many people searching for that term right now.

Sorry it's taken me so long to reply guys, and thanks SO MUCH for all the replies. I am using the 'Exact' mode so it is the exact phrase and it is 2400 LOCAL. The global is about 3000. I am definitely ranking #1 across the board. Court at The Keyword Academy suggests using 40% for traffic estimation but I use a safer, more realistic 35%, which should be about 840/month or about 28/day. The same site ranks 3rd for another competitive phrase, so I just don't know what's up. I've also toyed around with different title and description tags with no luck.

UPDATE: Just discovered that those 2 keyword phrases I'm talking about are local to google.co.uk (G's UK site), so I checked my rankings for it and I'm sitting around #30 for both phrases. Are there any special tactics to be used to conquer G's foreign SERPs? Or should I simply continue to build backlinks and hope to gradually move up in their rankings, just as with the US site? Sorry for the misinformation earlier and again thanks for all the help.

2400 searches but should be exact match, If it's not exact match, you will not getting the actual numbers you want. As Joe Crupie said, Market Samurai is a good helper.
