I have read a lot of posts and ebook about optimizing your post and title with h1 and h2 tag...so how do you do that with wordpress? do you actually put <h1> tag on the title and then <h2> tag if you have a subheading..i am kinda confused as some people advise that you dont need to put tag on your wordpress post since the homepage is already wrapped around h1 tag and other post titles are wrapped around h2 tags already.

The problem is that some (many actually) themes use the site name in H1 tags, which is wrong. You need a theme which does NOT use the site name in H1 tag because the site name is USUALLY not what you want to rank for.

A good theme usually sets the POST TITLE in H1

In the post you can then additionally point out some important sub-headlines with H2 or H3.

    You have those options:

    a) You get a properly coded theme made by someone who has a clue about SEO. (For example Thesis theme)

    b) You use your existing theme, if its one of those themes with H1 sitename you need to mod your theme. (Multiple H1 are not good)

    c) you look around for alternative themes and always examine your header tags until you find some which does it properly.

    You are aware that
    1. A page can have more than one h1 on it
    2. h1, h2, isn't meaning much these days. Search engines have moved on.

Spend your time creating content people like.
