Ranking on page #1 without a single backlink!

Here is some food for thought. Mind you, this is not something new by a long shot...

We all know this: We write a thread here on the forum...a minute later the thread could appear on Google and rank well for whatever keyword.

One of my sites (www.1up-seo.com) is also kind of established now - which has the advantage that i can write a blog entry, i let cron run to get the spiders.... - and its LITERALLY indexed and RANKED in Google 30 seconds later. Sometimes even very high.

The astonishing about this observation is that neither the new warrior thread or the just posted blog entry has any backlinks!

Your thoughts? What does this mean in terms of SEO? What does this say about about the common assumption that to rank an article you need backlinks?

It is certainly the case that DOMAIN backlinks and "authority" play a role...but sometimes i wonder whether "theme relevancy" also plays a role. Eg. i can blog about adwords and have a pretty good chance to rank high....but what if i write a totally unrelated article on my SEO blog?

Fresh Content can rank high on search engines as Google likes unique and fresh content and so there is a possibility that your site can rank high initially. But to remain there at the top you need to build some backlinks without which you cannot maintain the same high rank for a longer period of time.

When you post on here, this thread is linked to from within this site.

People forget that internal links count. The internal linking to this thread is what makes it rank in the search engines.

Remember that most of the time a website or page without any links to it will eventually drop out of the index and PageRank decays over time.

Have you seen this guys website?

Just sharing it because I know you could learn from him how to make your website more effective.

That is unless the miracle traffic bot product is yours.

On the topic of what you're asking it is normal. That's why I say never to use article directories and just build your own authority.

Once you get more and more authority what you're experiencing happens more often and it will eventually start to stick at the top rather than drop off again.

Sure they do. They wouldn't get indexed if they didn't.
