This Adsense ad has just appeared on a page of my antiscam blog:

Umbrella Company
Umbrellas leave you with 64%, We ensure you receive up to 85%
Anyone want to guess what it's an ad for?

I'm sure there's a lesson in how not to use Adwords somewhere in it.

An umbrella company is a contract agency, usually in the UK, which handles all the client communication and record keeping and whatnot for you. Unlike a recruiter, umbrella companies often do not locate the position - you simply refer your new client to them for payment and term negotiation. The client then pays them, they take a percentage, do all the tax reporting and whatnot... and give you the rest.

The umbrella company also carries insurance to cover you, which is a much more strict requirement in the UK than it is here.

Killjoy - you spoilt the fun by getting it right first time.

Ok - you win a virtual Mars Bar.

I'm sorry, I thought you were really asking

There's a UK authority site on contract labour out there, and during my days as a freelance writer last year, I wrote them some 300 articles on being and hiring an independent contractor in the UK. I now know far more than I ever expected to know about UK tax and employment laws... and I've actually been thinking about opening a legitimate UK subsidiary just to take advantage of that.

Ok - you win a virtual Mars Bar.
Is it a delicious UK Mars bar, or a nasty US one? They're different, you know.

I use an Umbrella COmpany when I'm contracting!

Its basically a company that handles all your payroll and accounting affairs at the same time saving you money...legally!
