Setting Up A DIRECTORY for backlinks

Okay, for seo purposes and backlinks can you do this, without having problems with Google? Would this be black hat?

Let's say I set up a directory on a specific niche topic. It's a niche topic related to my website (separate from the directory). The directory requires a link back (link exchange) in order to be listed on the directory. So, in the directory, anyone can post their websites related to the niche, but only in exchange for a link back to my other website related to that niche (Not a link back to my directory).

In other words, let's say it's a directory for Cameras and sites selling cameras. Sites come on, they post their link, but they have to link to my other (camera selling) website as the reciprocal link. Can I get away with this for backlinks? Has anyone ever tried this? Would it throw up and red flags for google? Do you think it would work?

There are tons of directories that have done this and are still doing it.

Only problem with it is you will find that not too many people will do the whole reciprocal link thing anymore.

And on top of that, websites go up and drop off like night and day. And when websites DO stay up, templates and designs change very often. I've found that when people do a website revamp or change their theme, sometimes they forget to KEEP all their links up, so in that case, your reciprocal links will be very unstable.

I read somewhere that reciprocal links are not google-friendly. Correct me if I'm wrong..

This is a 3 way link and not really a reciprocal link.

Thanks so much for all of the info guys. My niche is kind of woman centered with lots of people in that niche doing reciprocal links pages. I had thought about the possibility of doing a blog directory in my niche just to get a link from the good blogs related to my keyword. Especially on certain keywords I'd like to target. So who knows?
But I don't even know how I would go about setting up a directory yet. If I end up doing something like that, there's so much more I'd need to learn.

I found a couple of wordpress free directory scripts. WordPress › WordPress Link Directory WordPress Plugins
    WordPress Link Directory — SeanBluestone.com

But I wonder if there are other ones for a website. What I found when I looked up link directory software was mostly paid sites. I wonder which one would be the best.
