PPC Ad straight to affiliate vs Landing page creation

Hi there,
I have heard form a lot of sources, that its always preferable to create a landing page and from there advertise your link to the affiliate product/service which you are promoting. Rather than showing a link straight to the affiliate hop link page.
The reason I have been told is that its not a long term strategy (straight to hop) since you won't be able to collect email addresses for the creation of a list.
But how are you supposed to get someones email address and send them to an affiliate page?
Through email marketing later on?
Through a freebie?
Whats your method, and do you agree that a landing page creation is the way to go?
