Where did my backlinks go?

Hello there.
I am just starting to figure out this backlink thing but something doesn't make sense.

I built a squidoo lens, i submitted a couple of my blog articles to reddit and digg, posted some comments with signature or link to my blog on a couple of forums and blogs.

How do I see ALL my backlinks?

I just got Market samurai and I entered my url in the seo competition module and it showed 4 links yesterday (I should have more) AND ONLY TWO TODAY!
I'm puzzled. Where did my links go?

also, the google cache shows 7 days since google indexed me. Yesterday I went and used the google webmaster and verified my blog but it does not appear to help. how can I reindex faster?

Can someone explain what is wrong?
I searched the threads, maybe someone has a bookmarked thread w/good linkbuilding know-how and pitfalls

Thanks in advance

The number of backlinks changes all the time..sometimes it drops, sometimes it rises.
Sometimes I dropped from 700 to 300 in a day, and raised to 900 in no time

digital29 answered your question very well. Rises and drops in backlink counts happen. It's just part of the process. That's why you should be consistently getting more and more links every single day. Don't pay attention to the total backlink count in, say, Yahoo Site Explorer (i.e. the backlink count in market samurai). Look at your rankings. That is what matters.

I could explain the technical reason this happens, but honestly, it is not important.

Not every backlink gets indexed especially if it is a blog comment or forum post on some back page. Google's spiders are imperfect, they often fail to crawl every link on the page.

Also remember the average lifespan of a web page is only 75 days. Many of your backlinks are dying a natural death all the time.

Simply picture your backlinks as houseflies and you'll get the idea. They have a short lifespan, fly beyond your control, and are useless once they die.

My blog is three weeks old and my backlinks less than a week. That would be a reeeeeally short lifespan )

A lot of back links you attempt to "build" will never show up. Maybe the sites you're tackling are no-follow. Maybe they aren't crawled as often.

Plus, as other posters have said, it is very normal to have your backlink number fluctuate. If you're just starting any fluctuation might seem catastrophic.

Linking is a process that takes months and years to be truly impactful on your blog or website, so don't get discouraged by early changes. Keep going with your link campaign, without becoming spammy.

Why do people endlessly obsess over their built links? What is the obsession with looking at work already done?

Top tip - use the time to do more work.

Jazbo is right, instead of wasting your time on where the backlinks have gone, try creating more backlinks for your site-that would help. The number of backlinks can increase or decrease at any time depending on the relevancy of links,so the motto is always keep on building links,so that it dosen't drop below a certain level.
