how do you build links?

I once made a website for a relative, wasted hours on various useless sites so they would link to the site.

A few years passed now and I realized that I did not know a lot of things.

I still don't think I know how to do it(at least not how to effectively do it), I know the concepts, a 5 pr site linking to me will heighten my pr, I still do not understand it yet.

so I want to know, how do you build links?

say for example I have a fitness blog, how do I make other sites point at it and which sites do I need to point at it?

Basically go for variety, is the word of the day from what I've seen. Like on this site even, you could put a link in your sig to it. I have my site in my sig on all my forums I'm on. I also tweet about it on my twitter account and on facebook and youtube, put up videos and a fan page. You can get a lot of hits though Twitter though for me, getting signups from twitter has always been tricky!

Like with lots of other SEO tasks, linkbuilding can be easy or hard depending on who you are trying to please. It is easier to make links that make Google happy and raise your SERPs rank for a given keyword than it is to create links that will draw customers and please Google.

Are you trying to get ranked fast? Posting Youtube videos (with your link in the description), Diggs and Tweets will get your links crawled very quickly, but these can often provide only a flash of human traffic.

For long-term traffic your best bet is probably forum-posting, as Groovystar mentioned. Find a high-PR, relevant forum with lots of current members and lots of posts. Place your link in your signature, if that's allowed, and participate in the discussions. Start threads.

The traffic that comes direct from such a forum will be high-quality. The backlinks will also be good for your SERPs standings.

Social Bookmark and Social Profile sites are other good spots for your links.

How do I build links or how should you build links? I would begin by going through your competitors backlinks using Yahoo Site Explorer and see if you can get backlinks on those sites/pages as well. Article and Press Release distribution is another good way, as is profile links, social bookmarking, social networking, blog commenting, hubpages, squidoo lenses, and creating blogs on free hosting sites. This should keep yu busy for while.

Acquiring links gets easier the more effort you put into your website.

It is also helpful to make a habit of constantly building backlinks. Just because your page has ranked #1 for a term doesn't mean it will stay there. The pages that contain your backlinks may wink out over time. They may be changed or deactivated by their owners or be delisted by search engines.
Describe a focus for your site and try to stick to it. Then build a series of backlinks for each article or other bit of content. Maintain this practice and you'll have no difficulty.

Staying up there seems even harder than getting there from what I've heard, though getting there is sure no picnic. It is WORK. Be prepared to bust your ass every day or almost every day because when you're not linking you're looking for places to advertise and/or link.

I usually do relevant blog commenting on high PR dofollow blogs and link exchange with others to build links for my site , and as Kraggy said forum posting is also a great way to build backlinks .
