Just did a search for my main keyword and i had gone from page 3 up to #2 spot which i kinda expected to happen after spening the past couple weeks on an aggressive backlinking campaign.

Wierd thing is i checked it again 15 minutes later and its back to page 3 again!

I assume this is because the first time i searched i got the results from one of the servers which has updated during the google dance and the second and subsequent searches have returned old results from servers which havnt synced yet?

Someone please put my mind at ease

Cheers

Or at least make sure you are not logged into your gmail account and clean your history from the browser you are using.

Thanks for the replies guys, but not exactlly the answer i was looking for. I'm trying to determine why i would see my site at #2 in one search then 15 minutes later it be back down to page 3 again.

Does anyone know if google is in the process of updating its index? (google dance)

Is your site relatively new? Because Google dancing tends to affect newer sites(less than 6 months) than older sites. Also there is a lot of talk about Google recently changing algorithm affecting SERPS. It may take a while before it becomes more stable.

My domain is 4 years old and is a PR4 so it is not a new website.

No dance, just your cache... You might have visited your website by typing in its name and google sometimes shows the last viewed websites in the first page results temporarily.

Google is always updating it's index... we can't tell you if they are doing it right now or not.

Just be aware that they are doing it often.. and to focus on other stuff instead.
