Which is better for SEO

I am registering a domain for a new site. For example, my target keyword is weight lost. WeightLost.com or Weight-Lost.com, which is better for SEO? Or they are just the same for SEO.

Thank you!

Without the hyphen is better for resale purposes, but has no bearing on SEO. *At least in my experience.*

I've used hyphens for many years, along with no hyphens of course. I've not seen one iota of difference getting hyphenated domains ranked.

Get the domains without the hyphens if possible just because it looks better when you sale it, but for seo it doesn't matter in my opinion.

There's no difference from an SEO standpoint but no-hyphen will probably have more credibility with users since the best/most credible sites don't usually have them in their domain name.

Everybody was doing good up until that.

It's the same argument as selling the domain....having no hyphens in the domain generally has a higher perception....evidence (as others have already mentioned) is the higher price you can fetch if all other things are equal.

I don't know of any Fortune 1000 companies with hyphens in their domain name...VC startups would rather make up a word (what is a squidoo?) than use a hyphen in a domain.

That doesn't speak to actual value of the site's content if that is your angle...

Funny how someone in a thread asked about a hypothetical hyphen
in dog-training or some variation on dog training tips.

Did a search for dog training tips and
            dog-obedience-training-review.com
            Comes up #1
            BINGO!

Kills the myth. Who comes up with these magic formulas that
just do nothing except steer people to fail?

Concentrate on the real hard work of SEO instead of making
            domain resellers rich.

I think you misread my response....I and all others (and now you) said hyphens did NOT have a negative impact from an SEO perspective.

Trying to fetch a higher price is pumped up by the myth. Who comes up
with this stuff? People who don't know the first thing about SEO, telling
people what to buy. It's actually quite easy to come up with a great
domain, hyphen or not, from scratch. It's so easy, people think it's
            not so.

paulgl, I think you're claiming controversy where there is none...but I'll bite.

I think we've all agreed that hyphens make no difference from an SEO standpoint. (not sure what myths were being perpetuated)

Now, .com domains in general do fetch a higher price because of the perceived value. This isn't "made up"...it is just market based pricing. You can confirm for yourself on marketplaces like Sedo.com. (I don't know what a SEDO is but I am sure they could have found a more descriptive hyphenated domain, but they chose not to)

There are various intangibles to consider...for example, dog-training.com would fetch a higher price than dogtrainingforyourmother.com or a developed site with hyphens might sell higher than just a domain name without hyphens but all things being equal(as the OP presented) .com is a better purchase.

Moreover, choosing a domain for just SEO is short-sighted. A domain name selection goes beyond SEO...what about using hyphenated domains with branding?, PPC? (my tests show hyphens have lower performance) display advertising?, business cards?, on tradeshow booths, voice mail, and on and on ad nauseum.

It's true that some people may speak out of turn and have no experience with SEO when giving advice but I consult Fortune 1000 companies regarding their E strategies and broker many of their domain acquisitions so I think I am qualified to say from ample experience that hyphenated domains simply have lower perceived value. Not a single client of mine would purchase a hyphenated domain (or .info or .tv) when given a choice for their feeder sites(not to mention their money sites). I explain it doesn't matter for SEO rankings but they don't bite. Why? Because the perception is that these domains are often associated with one-man-shop, unprofessional, bottom feeder site owners.

WeightLost.com is definitely better than the dash. You will be able to rank easier. Always try to get domains that don't have dashes. Try to get .com, .net, and .org. Avoid the .info.

I'd agree on the .com and without the "-".

Considering both value from an SEO perspective as well as a possible resale perspective, that seems like a fairly easy choice!

Hyphen or no hyphen it doesnt matter if you are trying to rank for just a specific keyword then all you need to do is make sure the keyword you are trying to rank for is in your domain name as well.

  • If possible, use weightlost.com without the hyphen and with all lower case letters.
