Here's what I do, it may help you understand tags.

Tags, Categories, Archives, Search... they are all ways to order and navigate your blog. I don't use categories, and I've no-followed my archives on purpose. I did this because I chose to ONLY use tags. So now tags act as my main pages of each silo.

If you click on a tag on my blog, it will list the titles of every article with that tag. Then every post with that tag is within that silo, such as "food." Then there is another that is "vehicles." Of course these are just examples, but you get the point. Supposedly this structure helps search engines understand your topics because all of the related keywords get grouped.

But tags appear in the footer, which command less link juice. So I've also created a Table of Contents which lists every single article in chronological order on a main page, that is only one click removed from the top domain page through a link in the header. More link juice will be shared amongst them this way.

Plus each pages has the tags in my footer (where I chose to put them). So every page is linked to every page. Super duper interlinking.

Wordpress will not add tags automatically. They are just another way of navigating your page.

In WordPress, as the hobbster has said, Categories and Tags are your filing system. However, I use them differently from the way described above.

just go and install the all in one seo plug in. filling this section out with each post will get you fill out the keyword section as well. which is the same thing but better since you control the title tag and description a lot more easily
