Of course it does. Links from social bookmarking sites have certain weight, as do links from blogs, forums, article sites, etc...It's all part of the link building soup

So something like Bookmarking Demon is definitely going to help your ranking?

I doubt they can help much these days, really. They are low quality links. I see just two bookmarking sites constantly showing into webmaster tools.

if its dofollow it should it will help your ranking, but its best to outsource it, it gets a little tedious.

Not really. Google know what these things are really used for. However, you can get a lot of referral traffic from sites like digg and SU.

It appears that opinion is divided on this topic. Would love to know if anyone has actually done a test, where they had a domain and only used something like Bookmarking Demon to promote it, monitoring rankings as they go.

    Definitely works.
With twitter you can build a following as well.
Squidoo is one of the best.
You can also use onlywire.com to simultaneously bookmark to multiple sites.
But the key is to provide valuable content that Google likes rather than blatant advertising which Google does not like.

Do you mean bookmark a Squidoo lense or are you saying Bookmarking Demon will submit something to Squidoo?

Very important in social bookmarking is the quality of your content. If your content is of good quality, unique and interesting it will be bookmarked by many which in turn will increase your credibility and popularity. The more popular you become higher will be your listing among various social bookmarking sites. Also your listing will be still higher if different users across various networking sites access it rather than only one user accessing it again and again. Since ranking is based on the quality and popularity of your content, this data is used by search engines as well to evaluate your rankings.

Social bookmarking has little SEO value but it has some value nonetheless.

Ask yourself this and think of it from a search engines perspective.. Why would google give social bookmarking sites high link value if they know anyone can get on there and throw up a link in 30 seconds?

The real value of social bookmarking is it's crawl ability. The search engines are constantly crawling these sites for new content. With that being said you should use social bookmarking to get OTHER backlinks indexed quicker such as forum profiles.

      Hope this helped.

I will agree that social bookmarking doesn't hold much value but just because anyone can go there and throw up a link doesn't mean that Google would devalue it. Anyone can throw up an article or a blog comment, or a forum profile, or a forum post with a sig, or a web 2.0 property too, but those links still hold some value.

I see your point but the whole concept of social bookmarking in itself is to just throw up a link. A article, web 2.0 property and forum post are known to take some more effort before you can throw in some sort of link and I believe google recognizes link placement within content as a part of their algorithm. Lastly the real intention of forum profiles is not to throw just throw up a link but rather it is your profile within a given community. There is a little more to it then just put up a link and go. Now I am not sure how google is looking at them now because of all the forum profile spamming that has been done in the last few years but the intention stays the same nonetheless.

The biggest difference between these and social bookmarking sites is social bookmarking is made with the intention of just putting up links and because of that google surely recognizes that they can't weigh too much power on these sites.

Yeah social bookmarking submission can help you to gain your quality links. And in my observation, only few of it indexed by Google. And what I really like about SB submission is you can also gain your traffic if you really participate in their community. Like joining various groups, adding friends and submit your article well.
