Linkbuilding - seo question

Hi guys and gals,

i was wondering about a couple of seo/linkbuilding relation issues. Maybe you can help me out with this stuff?

- if i optimize my homepage for two keywords, lets say 'dog training' and 'dog obedience' and I start building backlinks with these keywords as anchor link for organic rankings. Is it also possible to rank for other keywords that my page isn't optimized for, but that I have built backlinks for with that particular keyword as anchor link (eg 'labrador training' or 'dog tricks'?
So basically, is it possible to rank for related keywords that my page isn't optimized for through backlinking?

- my homepage starts to rank well. My other (almost 200) pages, not so well. Is there some kind of seo technique that would allow me to rank the other pages higher? I add almost 5 to 10 pages per day, so it is almost impossible to build links to all of them. (my homepage is PR4, all the other pages are PR0)

Thank you for your help!

Guy

You should have the keywords in the content if you plan on getting good rankings for them. There's no reason to build backlinks for it, if your site has nothing to do with it.

Also, how are you creating 5-10 pages per day? Are you writing this content? Is it unique or is it scraped?

The quality of content matters a lot. The quantity of pages doesn't matter. If you're creating content that offers a lot of value, it's going to eventually get ranked well.

Yes, with enough backlinks you can rank for keywords that aren't on-page optimized. It's a bit harder, but you can do it. EXAMPLE: I have a site that is on page 1 of Google for the term web marketing, even though that term appears nowhere on my page. The power of backlinks.

The smartest thing you could do here is have a good internal linking structure. That means, wherever you can and wherever it's appropriate to link to other pages of your site. This is how those big authority sites rank for those small keywords - they have an excellent internal linking structure.

    Cheers,

Is there any chance you can get some viral traffic from some of the internal pages? What would be great is if you could start to promote of few of your best pages so that people like them and naturally link to them. What are you doing to involve real people on your site? (because those are the people that in the end will get google crawling you and ranking you)

@ internet: it's a videosite (kinda like youtube), so I don't have to write a lot of content, just a title and a description.

@Josip Barbaric: Allmost all of my pages are videopages. On every page there are related videos and other videos of the uploader. But these links are random, so everyone sees different related videos or videos of the uploader. There are also links back to the homepage and categories. Is this a good setup?

@Pray.m: I'm not sure what you mean by 'update your website with all the new pages first'. Could you elaborate on that?

dvduval: I'm working on that. I also offer social (bookmarking) buttons with every video, so people can share them with their friends.
Google crawls my site daily, so that is not really an issue.

      Thanks everyone for your advice!!

It's a great thing for your visitors, but it's not really an ideal thing for SEO. Is there a way for you to manually add additional links to your videopages, without disrupting the system you have in place?

Try to interlink your pages basically build backlinks to other pages in your site within your site. So for example if you have a page that talks about a crertain subject and you have keywords that are related to other subjects in that page then use them as anchor text to link to your other pages within your site. Google loves websites that have this interlinking sturcture look at wikipedia for example. This will also distribute your own PR to other pages within your site so you share your own link juice with your own pages. Hope this helps goodluck.

It's almost impossible to start building links to all of my videos. 5 to 10 new videos are being added daily.
I was thinking about starting with about ten videos that have a good keyword in the title and description and start building backlinks to those pages. Once I rank for those, choose ten new videos/keywords and do the same

Make sure you remove the barriers for spidering. Just like what Josip had said, linking structure is very important.
This is a very helpful tip from websitehelpers.com for spidering.

"1. Links are done in Javascript. Many engines don't follow links done in Javascript, such as those found in drop-down menus. If you have Javascript links, make certain you also have text links somewhere on the page as well. It doesn't hurt to have Javascript links as long as you also have plain links on the page.
    2. Links are done in Flash. Many engines can't follow links in Flash. If you have Flash links, make certain you also have text links somewhere on the page as well.
    3. Orphaned pages. If you forget to link to a certain page from at least one other page, that page page is said to be orphaned. An engine can't find it because it can't follow a link to it. Make sure every page on your site is linked to from at least one other page.
    4. Dynamic pages. Search engines can generally follow dynamic URLs (those with a question mark) as long as the have only one or two parameters. Three parameters -- hard to say. Four or more parameters is probably pushing it. But even if the engines can follow dynamic URLs, that doesn't necessarily mean that those pages will rank well. Two noted experts stated flatly in 2003 that pages with dynamic urls rank worse than those without. It's unclear whether that's true today, but many webmasters aren't taking chances: They're using the Mod Rewrite feature of the Apache web server software to turn dynamic urls into static ones."

    I hope this helped!

Sorry, but you lost me there. You can't truly optimize 1 single page for multiple keywords (unless perhaps you are talking about lesser-included words like "red dog" and "red dog collar".

Focus on one keyword on a page and optimize for that keyword. If you want a page optimized for dog obedience, then optimize an interior page for that exact keyword, not your root domain.

I find all kinds of information about this topic. Some say you can optimize for multiple keywords, some say you can't, I don't know who to believe anymore.

Would it be a good idea to add a blog to my site. Then I could write blogposts about certain topics and link to all the related videos on that topic. Since the blog will be linked too from the homepage this would create a great interlinking structure. And the blog posts would be optimized so they can rank too.

        Is this a good strategy?

(ps: thanks everyone, I'm learning so much here! )

You see, this is what I mean. In this thread alone there are two people who claim exactly the opposite. I respect both your opinions, but I'm goin to go with Josip Barbaric's opinion on this one.

Quick answer yes you can rank for multiple terms, it will depends on a lot of factors, but the easiest answer is yes...

The next part really comes down to your internal site framework and internal linking strategies in combination with your on page seo and keyword targeting...

If you could list your site, it would be easier to give you a more solid answer.

    Regards

    Marc

I would say your initial keywords are too broad. How about "dog obedience training" as a three word variation for example.

The key thing is to establish topical relevancy. This means do solid keyword research and use Google trends and wonder wheel for example to example linked topical relevance. This will give you more of an idea about the words, terms and phrases you should be weaving into your text to rank for multiple terms without being seen as over doing it.

You can then build on that topical relevance by building links to your content using anchor text that matches those words and terms.

The key point is its not just about keywords, its about what the whole of your text is saying, topic-wise, and how it relates to the links on it and to it.
