Crazy Keyword problem.

I have been backlinking a certain keyword phrase to an certain landing page on my site.
For a few months steady with article s, blog posts and I bought some profile links.

My page was moving up steadily on Google until I hovered on page 2.

Suddenly today the keyword phrase points to a different page on my site. One that only has one word in the keyword phrase on the whole page.

None of the words in my back linked keyword phrase are on the title tags, meta tags or text on the page that google is returning in my search.

makes no sense to me.

It might be that the other page wasn't available when google visited it. SEO does take time and I would recommend studying this for a few more days to see if the change is sticking. Google does sometimes have a way of spotting "quality signals" (or lack therof) faster, and this has been a big issue especially with internal pages or long tail keywords. If you got a bunch of profile links, that "could" be a problem. I know sometimes people will tell you that any link is okay, but I have found that if "overall" you have many low quality links pointing to your page, this CAN be a problem.

My site is 7 years old. I have 10s of thousands of back links I don't think the few thousand links I added this past 3 months could trigger a penaalty.

But how can me search phrase point to a page that does not contaion those keywords? How is that even possible?
