Case point: NOT buying other TLD was a mistake

Someone on here recommended Scroogle as a way to see true SERP. But they listed the .com version. Which leads to a porn site! I found Scroogle and I assume that this is what they meant to point to.

So, I'm thinking, wow, the owner of Scroogle.org scroo'd up by not obtaining the .com version, or else letting it lapse. Scroogle is a brandable name, as opposed to a domain that is just a keyword phrase.

So, I am wondering... if you have a company and you own the .com, you could certainly buy the .net and .org just to keep somebody else from getting them. BUT... is there any advantage to get more traffic? If you just do a re-direct, that won't likely add any traffic, will it, because just about anybody that types in your company name is going to append .com to it.

Could you build a mini-page that links to your .com site and do any good that way?

yeah, if you're trying to build a brand it's def smart to buy different versions of your domain name. You wouldn't need to build a micro-site with it though, you could just have it automatically redirect to whatever ccTLD you prefer.... Probably the .com in most situations.
