Backlinks Question

I am kinda knew to all this but I have been reading around the forum a bit and have learned a few things. I have had a a website for just over 2 years now.

I was wondering once I get a backlink do I need to do anything else? As I seen people dicussing pings and I don't understand.

    It is advisable to ping your site after a new post. There is no harm in doing so

    It also depends on where you get the backlink from. Some places are not indexed by Google so it is good to ping or bookmark the link in some cases.

      The best way I know to get this accomplished is to place your link, then go to the public view of your profile, the one everyone sees, and ping it with the following method.

      Create a bookmark for any site. Then go to that bookmark and right click and select properties. Change the name of the bookmark to 'ping' or something you like. Then in the location put the following script.
