What are the BENEFITS of a PRESS RELEASE?

I haven't really got into press releases yet. I've published a couple free ones for backlinks but thats about it.

I actually have quite a few questions. Hopefully it will help many rather than just me.

What can a paid press release do for me?

MOST IMPORTANTLY - CAN I REALLY ACHIEVE FIRST PAGE RANKINGS FOR SUPER HIGH TRAFFIC TERMS WITH A PRESS RELEASE?

Will it increase the SERPS of my actual site?

Does it bring large amounts of targeted traffic when distributed?

Is a press release effective for competitive niches?

Is a press release effective for any niche?

Is it OK to distribute the same PR through multiple PR services?

Also how do you not get nailed for duplicate content when they distribute one press release all over the internet?

What are the benefits of going after a $100 PR, versus a $20 PR? Is it worth it to just go big?

Do you recommend a particular service/strategy to a press release?

Thank ya

Well how many backlinks do you get. If that's all it was good for, why would so many people do it and pay so much for it?

PR's are very good and I'm an avocate of them. Good for backlinks and pagerank. I personally wouldn't bother with paid, just stick to the free ones. I would send the 'same' PR to as many free sites as possible. check the WSO from Daniel Tan for a good Press Release Strategy

If you're not going to be productive don't comment.

That WSO has absolutely nothing to do with press releases.

I've recently issued two press releases to promote my new cashsender website through PRweb.

The first one was the full meal deal and I paid $300 for heavy north american distribution, which included several target regions, several target industries, and distribution to the inboxes of many thousand journalists.

Result: zilch. Not a single follow up from anyone.

As stated above, news editors are drowning under similar releases. My news or your news will unlikely be of interest when they'd rather take Steve Jobs' press releases on his new offering.

My second release with PR web was their $80 budget release, which was about two weeks ago. Result: zilch again.

My advise would be to save your money and not spend money on using a paid press release service. The only benefit seems to be to the company doing the "distribution" ... that's my two cents.

I think people get the wrong idea about press releases. The press release has to have something news worthy to be picked up by journalist and even then its rare to get a top publication. Ideally your are looking for something to go viral. Sorry but your product or latest cash making website isn't going to go viral. build a community, announce a contest, develop a small useful application or paid to have one made.

  • friend, using low quality PR channels is indeed the same as using article submission dirs - your PR with links will be on crappy sites.
Using good PR channels like marketingwire will give you Yahoo, BusinessWeek, CNBS, etc links. Which is of a completely different value.

But what about the google and yahoo news stuff? Doesn't that bring a bunch of targeted traffic?

I just signed up for PR Webs service and they have a salesman emailing me trying to sell their "special offsite deal" for 12 press releases. If the sales team is really that on it, I think they are really looking for ways to increase business without results to prove the worth.

I was planning to try it on a consumer advocate guide for my building business to get it into local press rooms. I think the better strategy would be just to walk into the news station and try to talk to someone personally.

More work, but probably more results too.

Anyone else had a zilch experience?

Press Releases are the most popular means of providing publicity online and offline. The press release that gets published on one of the media outlets will have your website link provided within it. The more a consumer sees your business name being mentioned the more likely they will remember it the next time they, or someone they know, is in need of your products.

Most of the time its utterly pointless. However if you have a great headline and can get lucky and get syndicated onto google and yahoo news then you can profit.

I have used PR in the past with very good success. Brought me a lot of traffic and quite a bit of exposure. I used PRWeb's service (the $80 service). I did a few releases primarily to get the word out about my imminent launch.

It is my understanding that press releases are very good for back links and here is why:

    - The press release will hopefully get syndicated to many different news depositories. Every time it gets syndicated somewhere, you get more back links.
    - Google "views" press releases differently from articles and therefore duplicate content is not such an issue.
    - If relevant sites carry your press release, you know have that press release surrounded by other relevant content which then boosts the value of the inbound links from your press release.

NOTE: All of the above is theoretical - I have not tested it.

I tried Daniel Tan's Free Press Release WSO and found it a) cumbersome b) resulted in very poor syndication success rate and c) produced poor quality releases which just doesn't fit with my style.

I am a big fan of PRWeb. Very easy to use and when you publish and providing you have written a good release, you will get very good exposure.

I just submitted a release using the $200 SEO feature and I am quite eager to see what kind of back links it creates for me.

You can view the release here if you like:

Organic Clothing – Is Your Clothing Delivering Death in Small Doses?

I only launched it this morning and already it has been syndicated to five sites and I expect there will be many more to come!

Daniel's approach is aimed primarily at getting backlinks not PR. Your example is a very good one. The release is newsworthy and isn't just pointed at a product sale. I bought Daniel's WSO and considered it great for the cash but I would add some newsworthy potentially viral material into any release I do.

Good points. I was not as good at press release writing then as I am now so that would certainly play a role. And as you point it, with PRs, it's all about presentation.

Benefits of a press release are

      1) More traffic to your site
      2) Inexpensive way to get free publicity
      3) It helps to increase the backlinks of a website.
      4) It also helps to increase the keyword rankings.

As someone who worked in a newsroom for years, I can tell you that the majority of press releases like these (even ones that were emailed or faxed to specific people) wind up in the trash. No journalist is going to cover your new product - unless it has some kind of amazing news value. If you're hoping to get that kind of response from your press release, don't spend time writing/submitting them.

However, as some other folks have mentioned, they can be good for backlinks, so if that's your goal, go for it!

Further to my post above, it is true about the online syndications.

With my first PRWeb press release CashSender Becomes Every Small Merchants Payment Pal Slashing High Industry Fees For Online Payments that cost me $300, which was released on April 27/10 ... as of today, it has been syndicated 106 times according to Google: CashSender Becomes Every Small Merchants Payment Pal Slashing High Industry Fees For Online Payments - Google Search=

.. and 398 times according to Yahoo...
CashSender Becomes Every Small Merchants Payment Pal Slashing High Industry Fees For Online Payments - Yahoo! Search Results

So if we take Yahoo's search results to be the more accurate representation, it cost me less than a dollar for each back link, which if I understand correctly, is a very fair price for back links.

Strange that Google shows only one third the syndications as yahoo.

Now, for my most recent PRweb press release which cost me $80 Start-up Online Payment Service Announces Industry First Cash Back Program ... As of today it has been synidacated 80 times according to Yahoo. So I got 80 back links for $80.

Conclusion: PRweb will average out to $1 per back link depending on which of their services you use. This is probably a fair price. Press Releases do not bring a lot of media attention or web traffic, but they are a fair priced method for getting back links.
