Hey,

I'm a little bit concerned; my major site that was position #2 for its keyword has suddenly dropped to around #550... out of the blue. It's been there for about a day now.

I've been doing a little bit of backlinking last week, and I heard that my site could just be doing the Google Dance.

Anyone have any experience with this? Did your site come back to its original position?

My suggestion would be for you to continue everything as normal. In most cases, what people fail to see, is that the Google dance is a positive sign. Continue link building and you'll get even better rankings.

I have had this happen with dozens of sites and it always turned out great. No need to worry.

    Cheers,

    Josip

Watching rankings on a daily basis will drive you insane. Google dances a lot more now than they used to. Caffeine's emphasis on picking up new content ultra-fast constantly reshuffles things. Take the longer view and track things on a monthly instead of daily basis. I've got sites bouncing around all the time and it was making me crazy until I decided to stop obsessing and get back to work. Hard to do, but necessary.

Agree with Zeus66. You will bounce all over the place especially if you are in a competitive market. Just continue to plug away and use software to track the ranking for you.

        Thanks for the replies, guys.

The thing that disturbs me that my site has sat in the (almost) top spot for months now, and brings me in some nice revenue. For it to drop over five hundred places is unnerving.

However, I've been watching the SERPS for a few hours now and it's jumped around a number of times - 495, 552, 557, 600 - so something fishy is definitely going on.

        I'll keep my chin up

Don't worry about it right now. I had sites that took three weeks to settle back down to where they should be. And 90% of those sites got better rankings after the fact. You will be fine. Keep us posted.

    Thanks!

Although I have no real evidence to support this, I suggest that you do not add too many backlinks at once. Just add a few regularly - it seems to avoid the problem of huge changes in Google position.

The name "Google Dance" has often been used to describe the index update of the Google search engine. Google's index update occurred on average once per month. During an index update there was significant movement in search results and Google showed new backward links for pages.

Google was a trampoline in a former life. Just my experience.

I now find the whole 'dance' entertaining - in the end it settles down. Just keep your head down and keep going.

That doesn't sound like a google dance, it sounds like a google dunk.

Maybe it was caffeine? Or is your site in the sandbox? I heard that happens after a few months to most people. At least you are still indexed. Like they said, keep working at it, you have nothing to lose at this point.

Yes I have had the same experience but I think my problem was that I got back links really fast and about 370 in 2 days with a brand new site. Just got do a few a day and then increase it.

The dance effect is one of Google's effective techniques of their algorithim.

Dont worry, although it is hard, you just need to forget about your site for a while, continuing link building, start another site etc etc.

Your site is prob 90%+ likely to come back stronger then ever... Then if it doesnt, it is normally easy to figure out why!

Just continue building links, but ensure that they are coming from authority sites or trusted sites by google. This will help to bring back your website in its normal position.

Yes I have experienced the Google dance before especially after using Angela's backlinks but have never encountered change in 100s position, usually in tens only. The SERP usually comes back and like most others say here, in higher position. So don't worry too much. BTW what tool do you use to monitor the change in SERP to a few 100 positions.

    Well...

My site came back to #3, as you all said it would. It's great to see my earnings back up to where it should be.

To whomever PM'd me, I can't reply because I don't have 50 posts yet, but I have about 4 sites that make me good, consistent money.
