Hi, I have setup Google webmaster tools for my domain and have been building backlinks to my site for a few weeks now.

When I look within webmaster tools it shows 260 links... but if I use Google to show the links and search for link: w w w . domain . com (spaces included as I cannot post with a url link yet ) it shows no results.

I am seeing much better organic results so I know the backlinks are working but just curious as to why Google search shows no results....

Thanks in advance.

The google link: command only shows a very small sampling of your links. One of my sites has over 5,000 links in webmaster tools, and only shows a little over 100 with the link: command.

Thanks for your reply. Sounds like the webmaster tools is the one to trust.

Google does whatever they like, they also have database and space just like you. You dont expect them to pack everything in to their database.

That's right. The "link:" command shows only few of your existing backlinks.
The webmaster tool, and especially the Yahoo site explorer is really accurate when it comes to backlinks.

I use Yahoo Site Explorer as well - much more accurate and easy to decipher.

as you just discovered - do not bother with the link command in google.

I use site explorer - but from my looking at my own webserver logs, I know to take it's results with a grain of salt, as they do not crawl anywhere near as often or deep as google.

    Example:
I launched a site last month that has had over 30,000 googlebot visits, but less then 100 from yahoo (and under 20 from bing). Google had over 5,000 pages of my site indexed before yahoo slurp had even hit my site 15 times. Today, yahoo has only the homepage indexed, whereas google has over 11,000 pages of the site indexed now. If I were to drop links on any of those 11,000 pages, they would not show up in yahoo site explorer (for a while ,at least) - but google would most likely find them.
