    I think backlinks is the easiest way but their are definitely other ways of getting it indexed higher like google adwords?!?

    On-page SEO (keyword density, meta-tag usage, etc.)
    Off-site SEO (including backlinks, anchor text, etc.)

    The backlinking isn't just a quantity game. You want quality backlinks from pages with higher Page Rank, because those send more "juice" to your site.

    It really depends on what you're going after. In some cases
    you can't really compete with the big boys who have millions
    of dollars to advertise and invest.

    How to push your site up? Supposing your keyword research
    is done right and the competition isn't that strong, you'll need
    a constant stream of quality 500+ words articles published on
    your website and backlinks from reputable sources (social bookmarking,
    articles sites, related forums & blogs, other already established
    websites)

    One more thing you need to add to the mix .. patience and there you go,
    you have a good formula for ranking.

    If you are not, in most cases you don't have the quality content
    people are searching for in google.

      Hey,

      Adding to everything that's already been said here.
      While ranking your site,Google pays great attention to the simple fact
      of how long an average visitor stays on your website.
      So,the weigh of your backlinks may end up being discounted by Google
      Say,one website has 5000 backlinks and a 10 sec average visitor stay
      and a second one has 1000 backlinks and a 5 min average visitor stay and let assume both sites enjoy a similar quality of backlinks -
      the second one will most likely win in SERPs.
      It worked for my client's site with around 80 indexed pages and only around 60 backlinks built - the site hit page one outranking other sites with 200+ backlinks. Secret? On-page SEO and lots of videos that kept people staying for 5-25 min on the site.

      Takeaway: video helps the rankings,well,quality video indeed:-)

    To get your site on top of the SERP you need more quality links than you competitors. If you are in a competitive niche and you picked a competitive keyword it will take you more time and effort to push your site up. The secret is to link to sites with high page rank and always submit fresh, unique and informative articles. Apart from article marketing there are other methods you can use to build back links such as forum marketing, social bookmarking, blogging, blog commenting and so on.

    I have always thought length of stay plays a big part.
    BUT how would Google know?
    For example I Google dog training tips
    Being a seasoned surfer I open ALL the organic listings and the bought listings all in their own tab.
    The last tab would indicate to Google I must love this website (not so)
    I use Google analytics but how would they know the surfer is looking at one browser or has 10 open?
    I am sure I am not the only surfer with this particular trait.

    You, know what, there are some good thoughts and some good ideas, but there are only a few things that really matter,

    1. original content.
    2. revised content.
    3. relevant back links

    Back in the days of the wild wild west of the internet, it used to be enough to post pictures, videos, and some text in between, but these days, you need real content, and real back links,

    Reading between the lines, updated content, every day four or five times a day, do that and you will see a huge difference.
