I found this awhile ago and meant to post it earlier. A very good read for anyone wanting more info about how Google looks at backlinks.

All links are not created equal

It is definitely true that not all links are created equal. So many people overlook this when using certain tools to examine competition.

        Cliffs Notes for ya'll ...

        No Paid Links

        Quality Content

        Good Neighborhoods

        No Spam ...

        Blah blah blah ...

end result for anyone other than a literary guru and the time to invest heavily in Pulitzer caliber content and research ... get out your wallet for Adwords and PPC.

Goolge incessantly talks out both sides of their arse! Frankly im a bit sick of it - and this nonsense about just writing [ a god damn ton of ] quality content to influence your ranking and natural links.

But then we see their top advertisers [ overstock, amazon, Bed Bath Beyond, walmart, target ] ad nauseum at the top of the serps with nothing more on the page than a 3 sentence product description, and a buy it now button, and an affiliate marketer with ten 500 word articles of reviews and info on where and how to use and get the best deal on "it" - relegated to the equivalent of the middle of nowhere - like ohhh say page 27.

And really - what is relevant? The fact that you can spend $20m a year on PPC or that you can show someone how to buy product X Y or Z for $15 less somewhere special?

If quality content truly was the measurement - hey thats fine - thats the rules. But, to play the numpties as fools who keep believing Google is NOT evil and means exactly what they say - all the while they just continue to maximize the algo for their "Shareholders Equity" and disguise it as producing the most relevant content for the user experience ...

        Bah ...

          Beat me to it.

The official google webmaster blog is a must read.
Sadly, very few take advantage of the info. That is,
people in the WF. Google puts it all out there for
everyone to see, read, and profit. No voodoo there.

What I have seen, is people taking what google says,
spinning it, dosing it out to people, then say, see google
          is crazy.

They talk about links, they talk about content. They never
mix the 2 up. People mix the 2 up. Like to mean one or the other.
it's not about 1 or the other. It's about doing the right things on
all fields. Great content will not get you #1. Great links will not
get you #1. It's all that and more. Google assumes, maybe
too much, that readers of their info are already doing the good things
          and following all rules.

Like a baseball hitting coach saying the follow through is important to
being a good hitter. Then saying that leg stance is important to
being a good hitting. And some player saying, wait, I thought you said
the follow through would make me a great hitter. Coach said nothing of
          the sort.

The problem with relying too much on what Google says it that they are not always 100% truthful.

If everything they keep saying about content and quality links were true you would not see so many xrummer hammered sites at the top of the rankings in some very profitable niches.

That is obviously a good read about link importance

As we all know, pagerank is an algorithm created by the founders of Google to estimate the importance of web pages. The basic idea behind the it is the fact that
a link (also called hyperlink or backlink) from page A to page B can be seen as a vote of trust from page A to page B. The higher the number of links pointing to a page, the higher its its rankings inside Google's search results.

Most people focus on getting external links, but they forget that internal links also pass link juice, and this is how you can create more valuable links within your websites.

4morereferrals, exellent post! Agree with all your points.
If a SEO guy would take and follow all these Google 'guidelines' honestly, then the top results for him in SERP would be somewhere in between 1000 and 100...000 page of search results.

Lol. Google is trying to make fools out of us all for years already by such kind of 'guidelines', but real experts really fool Google around by introducing new and innovative ways of link building.
