Redirected websites, for how long?

What I mean by this is:

If I direct a website to a new domain because the new domain is a better one for keyword reasons, how long do I need to redirect it for until the new one is the same as the previous one and I can use the first one for something else?

Whilst the domain is redirected is it usable for anything else? Will all the goodness from the domain leave it??

Do you get me?

If you want to use the first one for something else, then you cant redirect the site, what
you need to do is just transfer the files to the new domain name & redesign the old domain
    to your new project.

    Hope this helps.

Until all your incoming links point directly to the new site. As long as you have any incoming links that you care about still pointing to the old site you should the 301 in place.

For me to make ALL the back links point towards the new domain it would be impossible!!!

Are you basically saying that I would have to redirect the site for a very long time otherwise as soon as I take the redirection off it would effect the sites rankings?

Yes. If you stop redirecting the links to the new site they stop doing you any good.

I honestly do not understand how you think your links will go to the new domain if you do not redirect them. If you do not redirect an incoming link that points to a page that you have moved then there is absolutely no way the new location can get any benefit from that link.

Very simple redirect or lose the think. Stop the redirect and lose the link...
