Pinged backlinks and went down

Hey all,

So I used a backlink checker (market samurai) to list all the backlinks to one of my sites, it listed ~60. I then pinged all of them and 2 days later the backlink checker is now showing 480 backlinks.

As a result, I went down 2 places... seems like google has just indexed a whole heap of my links at once. I actually built these very gradually but does google now think that they have all appeared overnight and thus penalised me?

Any ideas?

If you do something that Google decides it is going to punish your for it is not going to drop you 2 places in the rankings they will put you on the bottom somewhere.

Honestly it is hard to say what happened. Rankings do fluctuate on a regular basis. I have seen them bounce back and forth in the same day when I know I did absolutely nothing to the site.

How old is your site? How long had it had that position? What is your competition doing? What positions are we talking about? Did it go from 1 to 3 or from 54 to 57.

There is way too much information missing for anyone to even guess what happened.

Hi Richard - thanks for the reply.

Site is about 1 year old, we're talking drop from #6 to #8,

Held the #6 position for about 3 months.

I also recently went through and manually changed a lot of the backlink anchor text to make it look more 'natural' - i.e. instead of 40 links with the anchor text "fish tanks" i varied them slightly i.e. "fish tank site", "great fish tanks"...etc

So, you pinged 60 links, and 420 previously put up links showed up soon thereafter, and you think pinging the 60 links had anything to do with it?

In any event, it's not a penalty. On some new sites of mine I build up to a 1000 new links per day. Just keep on building links. People get way to hung up with jumps in google. If you keep on building links things WILL work out in Google. This is a marathon not a sprint.

Down 2 places is probably a little insignificant to call it a penalty. It may be due to the aftermath of Google Caffeine. But it's interesting to see how pinged had helped much to index your backlinks.

I would not call a 2-place drop a penalty. When google penalises they don't pansy around, they'll drop you off the face of the earth as in a couple hundred spots. fluctuating down 2 slots after 3 months actually sounds perfectly normal to me.
