How Do You Check Keyword Traffic?

How do you estimate how much traffic a keyword can bring you? I've used a few different keyword tools for long tail keywords but they all seem like rough estimates, hit or miss kind of things.

Anyways I want to know if anybody knows how do get a good estimate for how much traffic a keyword gets. How accurate is the Google keyword tool? If the tool says 100,000 searches what would you expect to get for a #1 position?

Are there better ways to doing this?

I use data from google keyword tool. For a first position on average you can expect to get 42% of that traffic, so with 100,000 searches you'd probably get around 42,000

Ok, how has that been going for you? Have you got to the first place and compared it? Does theory meet up with reality here?

No I don't have enough data to confirm that, but this is considered the average number. Of course it depends on the keyword.

My first positions usually get about 40-45% CTR . And this is the amount you can expect in most cases.

I sometimes use wordtracker but i am yet to figure out how its traffic estimation system works. Can anybody in the house help me out?
