Hey guys,

Search engine result page positions are something very very important, isn't it? But how can we find/suggest an accurate (not completely) reason for a quick drop?? I have a blog, which came to the top of SERP a day and maintained an avg pos of 12 for a week. But now it has dropped to 4/5th page.

What do you think about SERP drops? What can be the reason(s)? Please feel free to share your views on this issue.? Thank you very much!

A lot of people have been asking this in the last 24 hours... days... weeks... ever since the MayDay / Caffeine updates went through...

Browse a little and you'll find a lot of similar questions with a variety of answers.

If you understand SEO basics, you'll understand that there is no easy answer to your question because there are so many factors involved.

SEO Basics: The Principles of Search Engine Optimization

If you didn't do anything to break the rules with Google, and you're regularly adding fresh, unique, organic, high quality content, then it probably has something to do with recent algorithmic changes. Focus on your website and attracting visitors who are looking for what you have to offer. If what you create is good, others will link to it, and you'll climb in the SERPs.

@HunterSnake, you are absolutely right! Its always tough to answer. But here in my case, the traffic, adsense revenue, backlinks everything has increased in the last month -- and serp dropped.. It's kinda confusing...!!

Are you using Google Analytics? Like can you tell where you're getting traffic from?

Yeah, I'm using Google Analytics and other stat checkers as well. Mos of the visits are coming via organic results from Google search (upto 60-70%), 20-30% Direct traffic and the balance is referred traffic.

I am just as confused as you. Usually when SERP declines, everything else does. Not always, but sometimes. Maybe you're getting more traffic for a particular term somewhere.

Yeah, that might be possible. But usually if the serp drops for the main keywords, the sites overall search engine position will be so weak and the traffic will be lowered. Here in this case I think - over all the site must be getting good SE visibility. LOL!

This is my last few days G Analytics.

There will always be movements in the SERPs! And the variables that cause the movement could be but not limited to:

          (a). Direct competition adding/building BLs
(b). A flood of new entries of articles, videos, blog posts, etc.
          (c). SERP Algo changes
(d). Temporary impact from improper backlink building tactics
          (e). New websites launched
(f). Particular keyword phrase made major or mid level news syndication

There are other variables but those are some of the top reasons.

What you experienced is normal. The key to a continued rise to the top and then grabbing and maintaining that top position is simple; keep building BLs and diversify with a mixture of high PR and low PR BLs and a percentage of no follows so your link building looks natural.

Once you get to the top spot, don't stop! Push enough BLs so the average IMer will analyze your site stats and go, "It's not worth it to try and knock him off...its just too much effort and too much work!" ROTFLMAO

The reason this is so funny is because most IMers have been brain washed not to go after keyword phrases when they see a certain amount of BLs and PR.
