Hello,

I am having some confusion about backlinks.

I have read someone say that you could get a blank web site to #1 in Giggle if you had enough backlinks. Well I am sure that was just an exageration but I am still confused.

I am going to use Angela as an example. Everyone knows she specializes in backlinks and all this info is public in her WSO ad. Besides, she is one of the best (most recommended) for backlinks so I doubt she'll care.

In her ad her on WF she says that she's #1 for her name Angela. I giggled it today and she is actually #2 right now.

Anyway I fired up SEOQuake the backlink numbers kind of surprised me.

SEOQ shows her site, #2 position, as being a PR 4 with 2,061 backlinks. Rank is 19546.

The first position has a PR 4 with only 176 links. The rank is 977781.

The 5th position is held by Wikipedia. It has a PR 6 with 4,013 backilnks. The rank is 6.

There is one PR 7 page with just over 37,000 backlinks on page one at #9.

Now I understand that some backilnks do not show even after giggle sees them. I also understand that there are different qualities of backlinks. But can Angela have that many more backlinks, or that much better, than Wikipedia?

Just by shear numbers shouldn't Wikipedia or the site that is currently at #9 be #1?

Thanks in advance for your opinions.

Steve

I am sure, more experinced members will add to this, but my experience is that the quality of backlinks is more important then the number.

For a keyword, I am trying to compete with seems to be also above wikipedia, because I have some links from authority sites like local councils etc.

So, this might be the case, but I also want to read the rest of members, what their views are on your question.

Backlinks equate to Page Rank and Page Rank is only one piece of the pie. You have to take into consideration; keyword usage on the site, anchor text, domain names, domain age, site speed, site freshness (caffeine), and I'm sure I'm leaving a few out.

Backlinks are a big part of the serp puzzle, but are not the whole story. I recommend you get hold of a free piece of software called traffic travis (I am not affiliated with TT in any way, just trying to be helpful). In the SEO analysis area it will give you a run down of the most important factors affecting rankings for any given keyword combination, and also shows you a video explaining the results.

Basically some of the most important factors are the number of backlinks, the quality of the backlinks, the anchor text used in the back links, the on page seo factors (keywords in title, meta description, meta keywords, and url of page), the age of the domain, the page rank of the domain, and a few other things that I cant remember off the top of my head.

      Hope this helps
