That's a very tough one. If the negative comments are true - you'll have a very hard time. You need a reputation management pro, that'll cost you a ton of money (mid 4 figures +).

Let us know how it goes, these things are always interesting.

some sites like ripoffreport are notorious for showing highly in search engines for negative info on companies (as well as for breaking their own rules).

Sites like that are great for doing negative reputation campaigns against competition but it's difficult to push negative links down.

Your best bet is to get a good lawyer if you have the money. There are legal steps you can take to pursue having a site take down a negative comment.

The other thing you can do is build up your social networks. It's not difficult for anyone to have their site #1, followed by Twitter, LinkedIn, Facebook, etc. There's enough popular and strong social networks out there to easily take up 10 positions on the first page of Google.

Totally agree. Fight fire with fire. You could do a whole range of things like start a few free blogs with different services like wordpress.com, blogger, and others. Fill them with content and link to your site. You'll push your site as well as start filling the front page.

Include videos if you can. Video can take up to 3 or 4 place in a SERP.

Just get creative, produce more good publicity content than they can produce bad publicity content and do it on a wider scale. Even a spammy old link wheel could help you if done right.

    Question:

Are these comments true? Cause if they are, you need to clean your own house first, otherwise you'll be chasing them for a long time.

Just make 20+ web 2.0 sites and build backlinks to all of them. Also send a lawyers letter to hosts asking them to remove slanderous blogs.

The easiest thing to do is to push them down in the results by flooding the first couple of pages with positive contents: think Squidoo, blogs, simple Websites, etc.

You probably know infinitely more about SEO than they do, so it should be not too hard.
Sometimes a few negative things stick though, and a lawyer may be an option

Do one SENuke blast or hire a lawyer...?

      Hmm...

      It's a tough one... :p

If it were me I would pay for a letter from lawyer and do the senuke blast anyway.

Just that won't do the job, but your thinking is correct.

A SEnuke blast is pretty useless in this case, as the blogs need to be of good quality. SEnuke blogs are easy to take down (by contacting web 2.0 site owners/mods). You'll also need a ton of backlinks to them. Sounds like a 3-4 day job to be honest, then you wait...

Depending on how determined and angry those former employees are, this might just do it.

If, on the other hand, they're really after you - you need someone who is better than them (or the person they're paying) at SEO to do the job. And don't forget that this isn't just going to be about SEO - if they're not dumb they'll be trying to take your blogs down in so many ways it'll make your head spin.

If the complaints are true and whoever is after you is really good and determined - there's not much you can do apart from fixing whatever problems your company is having, and nicely asking them to back off.

Well getting them down to page 5 is probably not really needed, off page 2 will probably do the trick as very few people go farther than that.

The farther you want to push them down the more expensive it is going to be as what you are talking about doing is getting pages ranked higher than all the negative ones. A lot more work to get 40 pages ahead of somebody than it is 10 or 20.

The only "legitimate" way to push them off of page 1 is to replace them with other favorable sites on page 1... i.e. create or help other favorable sites outrank the negative sites. This generally means building links to them with your company name as the link text.

You can go the online reputation management route. The ORM companies that are generally successful are those overseas that use illegal means to ruin the reputation of those negative sites, to get them banned from search engines... using all sorts of dubious techniques. And they are overseas for a reason - to avoid prosecution in the US.
