What Chance Do I Have In Ranking?

Hey guys,

I am looking to build a site but want to know what kind of chance I have to rank in this niche with a domain that basically cannot contain the keywords.

So what the site will be about is action figures, based on a particular video game. I am planning on doing reviews on each of them as I have them all; also putting Youtube videos up, etc.

There is a fair bit of traffic, NOT A TONE, but a good amount for me to make some decent money off the niche.

Anyway, here are the sites I need to compete against:
joystiq
a blogspot blog (has keyword in domain)
teamxbox
figures
toywiz
thinkgeek
amazon
bigbadtoystore

Hubpages (has keywords in both title and url) and Youtube videos on second page.

Now, will I be able to get around with having the keyword in my domain name? Which basically is "game name action figures".

Looking forward to some advice on this; I am ready to start a site just need some help on the domain and whether I can get there.

You should be able to rank with specific keyword rich articles and an optimization strategy. You may not want to try to rank for the specific keywords of the action figure but maybe want to rank for the characteristics of the action figures.
For instance, Batman. You may not rank for Batman, but, your articles may rank for 'Batman utility belt', or 'Batman fights the Joker'. Naturally these are only examples to prove a point.
One thing that has been working for me is to search for long tail key phrases regarding my niche that have under 80-100K pages ranked for those key words. I then right a couple of unique and original articles as seed for my link wheel. Once I have had the articles on the 2.0 sites, I then spin them a little and put them on lesser 2.0s and point them to my high PR 2.0m which in turn point to my page.
It's a long process. I have 4 key words that rank in the top 6 spots in google's broad search right now and several others on page 2 and 3.

It can be done, but, you need patients.

As another example, I have a killer domain name in the Int. Mkt. space but have not been able to bump it up past 360. There is too much comp and the competition is established.
Yours can be done, it just takes thinking outside the box.

Like ptman01 said, it can be done, but you need patience. You also need a good plan. If you don't have a plan in place and you don't take your time, you will likely be disappointed. And that will lead to you giving up. Nobody likes a quitter. Make a plan.

So a plan can be something like:
      - Submit 1 article a day to the site for the first month, have articles on the main keywords and related keywords.
      - Submit articles to ArticlesBase, HubPages, Squidoo, Ezine, etc

Ping, Social Bookmark, create Twitter account, blog commenting, facebook page; signature in related forums.

What else would I add to my plan?

I'd try some guest blogging. You can open yourself up to different audiences and get some decent links.

Problem with guest blogging is it in most cases appeals only to those in the IM niche.
