Hi all,

I've recently cracked the Top 10 on a couple of keywords and am quite happy about it. But like most, I'd like to be in the Top 5. Since these are new sites (few months old), do I stand a fighting chance? I work mostly in sports related sites, and the following sites are ahead of me: majesticathletic, amazon, thefind, cheroes, usatoday, fansedge, and sportsbuy. Most of these are highly authorative sites, so i'm not sure if there are any tips to beat these guys?

Thanks for any help!

    Hi Adam,

I got your PM. I think you are really on the right track. I told you it wouldn't be easy, but you have managed to crack the top ten for some pretty competitive keywords. Just remember to keep building links and adding unique content to your website.

I don't think it is an exact science but you are on the right track!

    Congrats!

Try to get one way links as they are the best form of backlinks. A good way to do this is through link bait like special report giveaways, free ebooks. If they are good, most people would gladly link to you. Also find some top blogs to guest post. You'd be pleasantly surprised at the no. of one-way backlinks this can generate you with all the web 2.0 tools like twitter and other social bookmarking sites giving you a boost.

Some days my site gets ranked above Wikipedia for its main keyword, so I can tell you it can definitely be done. With regard to tips, there are no magic pills: provide good content first and foremost. If you do, other people will link to you voluntarily and your rankings will start going in the right direction.

Sometimes it is a matter of tweaking your content just a little bit. Look at the placement of your keywords and try changing them just slightly. Especially the title and where your keyword appears in your first paragraph.

By making this adjustment, you can sometimes jump ahead of others.

But make sure you wait a few days and also reping the content.

Additionally, continue to re-inforce that keyword by adding additional content and link to it.

        Thanks all!

So really it's all about getting more and more links to your site? It seems that is the underlying understanding about how to do it. I've never actually taken part in any Social bookmarking or Article marketing, but would those method help? I'm wondering if getting 1 single backlink from writing an article would be beneficial for me.

Anyways again, really appreciate the insight!

Surprisingly to know that what really matter is the backlink of each page above you, if you're trying to beat the competitors' main index, e.g. www.domain.com then it will be hard, but if you're trying to beat competitors' inner page, e.g. www.domain.com/page then it will be much easier, but first try to analyze the backlinks of those inner pages, if they have lots of quality backlinks then it will be hard, but if they only have a few backlinks then it will be easy.

I think amazon's inner pages only have few to 0 quality backlinks, except from its domain of course.
