Help, Indexed Pages By Google Way Down: Mayday or Caffeine?

I have a site that had 69,000 pages indexed as of June 1. The number of indexed pages is now down to 8K. As a result, organic visits have plummeted to 30-40% of what they were previously.
We have:
1. Re-submitted the sitemap with 120K URLs
2. Revised the pages to provide better entry points, i.e. breadcrumbs, popular searches.
The Google bots continue to crawl, but the number of indexed pages are not going up (it's been steady at 8K for about a week now). Plus, we have loads of new content every day, with 500 to 1000 new URLs every day inputted by users.
What gives? Is this Mayday or Caffeine? If it's Mayday, why didn't the number start to decline in May? Any quick fixes/suggestions?
