Backlinks to page or domain

Backlinks to page or domain, which of these hold more weight?
I use Market Samurai and in my search for keywords and then at the competition, and in my search I find that some sites are not set up for SEO very well or have any backilnks to the page, but have a ton of backlinks to the domain.
So should a site having a lot of backlinks to the domain but not much other than that keep me from setting up a site in that niche?
Thanks so much
Jack

I think it looks better to the search engines if there are some links out there that go to your deep content pages. I don't like that as I prefer everyone go through the 'front doors' of my sites, but I can understand why it looks more natural to the search engines. My opinion only based on looking at number 1 site in my niche, not on huge study.

      Isn't your domain a webpage?

Build an authority site by building rep of the main index page.
Then pass the PR to other content pages.

Doing it the other way would be backwards.

I can't think of a solid reason to do that.

You certainly want to build links, for variety, to sub pages.
My take is 75% main index, 25% individual pages. But keep
in mind, the best PR building program is your own off of your
      main index page internal linking.

Both. But mainly to the home page.
