Blogroll backlinks, are they worth it?

90% of blogroll links I see, look completely off topic from the website itself. It's pretty obvious people have paid/asked the owner to wack there link on their website.

Do you think Google picks up on this? Or will a PR4+ backlink on an unrelated website actually boost your rank in the engines?

    when I was a newbie, I get my page rank simply from link exchange. I choose the relate blog and of course have a page rank. So far, I have got PR3 and it has not changed until now. So, yes, blogroll backlink really works.
