Can you give a reason for this?

Let's say you have a page with 10 "link juice points". This page has two links on it:

    one dofollow

    one nofollow

In this case, the dofollow link will inherit 10 link juice points, and the original page with the links still has 10 points.

If both links are dofollow, each page gets 5 points and the original page still has 10 points.

If both links are nofollow, each gets 0 link points and the original page still has 10 points.

A very important concept to understand is that a page keeps its links points AND passes them on and you can use nofollow to "sculpt" and maximize PR and link juice.

A real life example is a site with 6 content pages plus a TOS page and Privacy page, for a total of 8 pages. Instead of sharing the link juice evenly between all 8 pages (assuming each page links to all other pages), using the nofollow links can focus the link juice on the 6 content pages and not the TOS and Privacy page.

Another technique is to use PR scultiping on your own site to improve your link juice to improve your ranking. Let's say you have a page that ranks #12 in the SERPs. It may be possible to create a few more pages on your site, then using all the other pages focus their link juice on the one page. This alone may be enough to get the page into the top 10.

And be sure to use nofollow for all your affiliate links...

Awesome exactly what I wanted to confirm. What happens if you maximize a page with incoming PR juice and add the nofollow attribute to that page (This means that other pages are nofollowed or disconnect from that page within the website) does this create any disadvantages.

Nofollow hasn't worked like that for quite some time.

PR (or linkjuice as you say) is split up between the total links but the nofollow links do not pass it through.

In your example of 10 point, 1 nofollow, 1 normal:
      • The normal links receives 5 points (in theory)
      • The nofollow receives 0 points.
      • 5 points is wasted.
This change was added to prevent PageRank scuplting.

What I thinks, we should maintain a balance between do follow and no follow links. Then our linking strategy seems to be natural to Search Engines since it will add value to Link Diversity concept . It's true that no follow links does not pass PR juice but still certain Search Engines for example Yahoo( I have checked Yahoo on my own and can show the proof) indexes no follow backlinks and also that backlink can generate decent traffic if we can post it in quality relevant forums. Hope I am clear for all.

Also worth noting is that no follow on internal links bleeds away pagerank internally. It's better not to use no follow on internal links on any internal pages.

Ok hmm interesting. I know that the decay factor comes into it if its a probability by the normal surfer factor thus giving link juice to other sites?

You have to balance up your link profile with do follow & no follow links. It's to make your back-linking campaign looked more natural.

nofollow is a wast of time so make sure you download a plug in that will do the work by finding out if it is follow or nofollow before you post.

There have been rumors about Yahoo not taking into account if a link is no-follow, but then again, they are just rumors. Unless it is do-follow you will receive no PR juice. Your back-linking strategy should include both do-follow and no-follow.

yep I guess these alot of noise out there . I guess people want more dofollows than nofollow because of the benefits. But as webmasters we have to find a balance.

matt cutts blog stresses that most of the major search engines use nofollow attributes.

NoFollow does not increase page rank. It may or may not increase authority of the page it is linking to. No conclusive study has been conducted yet to confirm this. However, what has been confirmed, is that no Page Rank will be passed.
