I wanted to help out a friend who has a skateboard company in Australia. They are looking for some basic SEO help.

Are there any quick tips I should know about how different the Search Engine SEO market is down under vs here in the states.

Or will all the same principals of page optimization, video & article marketing, link building, etc work?

Thanks in advance. I did a quick search and did not find much here on the forum So hopefully this helps others also.

Cheers!

All the same principles will apply. Be sure to submit your articles to Australian article directories for some local targeted traffic. If they don't already have a website, they will need an ABN (Australian Business Number) if they want to register a .com.au domain.

Thanks! So if they already have an existing site that is .com, it sounds like a first step should be to also buy the .com.au

I will also head over to WSO to see if anyone is offering any SO's for article marketing.

I've been trying to rank sites based in another country and found that my .com backlinks did not seem to have any effect. Also, I registered .com and .info domains and could not get them to rank easily.

I think there could be a lot of mileage in setting up article directories in other countries. It's more of a long term project though.

Australian consumers trust a .com.au domain ALOT more than a .com domain for the simple fact that one cannot obtain a .au domain without an ABN. Thus the consumer has added protection in the form of company, tax and consumer legislation.

    Heres what I recommend:

    .com.au domain
    links from AU sites
hosting IP is located in AU

I have done a lot of SEO work for a client of mine out of AU for local business results. Any questions free to ask.

What a load of nonsense. You are making that up .. or do you have a link to some authoritative source that this is the case? Almost all my Australian based sites have a plenty of .com links from all over the world that help them just fine in google.com.au
Some of them have NO links from .au domains or from .com's based in Australia - care to explain why they rank well in google.com.au?

All I worry about is hosting them on a server based in Australia

I've seen plenty of australian based .com's outrank .com.au's so having a .com versus a .com.au as far as i can tell makes no difference at all.

    I've even seen .net's outrank .com.au's

.au is a local domain. It might be beneficial if you buy the domain with a aussie host than with other countrys because of IP factors and get backlinks from websites in aussie - best place to get local backlinks are from business directorys' like yellow pages etc. You can get a .com domain but the competition increases for that niche because it targets on a global scale

        James,

Also be aware that there are mild variations in spelling some words here Vs USA

        centre vs center
        colour vs color
aluminium vs aluminum (every skateboarding website will mention it hahaha)

        But you get my drift.

Google looks at which country site the search is coming from more than anything else. So if a user is searching on google.com.au, it will return local searches as often as possible because that is what would be most relevant to that user.

Concentrate on normal SEO practices and Google will do the rest for you. Local backlinks dont mean that much IMO. Even hosting on an Australian server is not that crucial if you have a .com.au domain.

If you are looking to target Australia only, dont bother with a .com domain. Standard SEO on a .com.au will see good rankings on Google Australia and the traffic you are after.

I work only once for Australian site and got quick results just in a week, my main focus is Australian forums , articles directories and links from Australian sites. But bad thing is that both keywords on which i work are not even in first 20 pages of Google.com and are top at Google.com.au.
