Hi there
I came across this site the other day while researching SEO and feel like I have been on it for two days solid reading all your great advice! I actually read a post by Shawn Horwood and contacted him - he was so helpful to me a complete stranger - so thank you Shawn!

I run an e-commerce site in the uk selling handbags. we have been going since Sep 09 and also have two other parts to the business which are "offline". The site has been getting us a little income, about £200 a month on avg. Not great really but what can I expect when I have just been tinkering with seo and adwords. We get anywhere between 800 - 2000 unique visitors per month depending on our adwords, however we know this is nowhere near enough traffic.
I try to keyword every item I put up and have keyworded the front page etc. I have just started uploading videos to youtube and have a facebook/twitter page. I know there is so much still to be done in terms of seo (especially since I came across this site) but I am overwhelmed and just dont know where to start ! Between senuke, all the backlinking software, trafficgeyser, tube mogul etc I am just baffled! i would be so grateful if someone out there could point me in the right direction of where to go next. I would really like to outsource a lot of this however I have come across so many SEO companies that expect so much money and dont seem to return the results. I understand that it will take a few months at least to feed into google and Im prepared for this. If anyone could suggest any good guys that may be interested in helpign I would appreciate it a lot. I would also be grateful if you could point me in the right direction of which programmes etc to use and what to start with as I am prepared to put work in myself.

Sorry for the very long ramble, I just want to get things moving finally as I feel I have been putting this on the back burner for far too long.

Many thanks in advance
Louise

Welcome to the Forum! You are in the right place to learn and grow with SEO. If you can devote a couple hours a day to SEO, then strike out on your own. But, if you have more money than you do time, then consider an SEO expert. You'll first want to establish your longer-tail keywords you wish to go after. When you are starting out, only go after a few and this will lead to link-equity and better rankings. Don't go after keywords that are too competitive. Then, start building links each day on forums, blogs, and via article marketing. Stick to one method and strive to do 50 -100 links using only that method...good luck!

In this situation you are a business. So you need to look at your ROI and also time vs. building/optimizing. You may find that you should hire a local consultant to optimize your website and then also use CPC if your ROI is high enough. ie If you make $100 per handbag, spending up to $99 seems reasonable for acquiring a customer.

You could have many blogs that are optimized for different hand bag phrases.

this will allow you to drive ultra targetted traffic to your site! also, its easier to rank for a keyword with your keyword as your omn name.

PM me if you need more advice o how to acheive this.

Be sure to familiarize yourself with much of the SEO basics. It is much easier to hire someone when you know what you are talking about and what to expect. Before signing anything don't be afraid to take the contract and have someone else review it for you.
And be absolutely sure that everything is to Your satisfaction and sounds logical. If the SEO company is going to do this or that be sure to research this or that and ask opinions if this or that is correct.

One last thing about hiring an SEO company, make sure they have their own work/site up to par with good results. I don't know how many times I have been approached by people going to take me to he top of Google only to find their site gets about 1 visitor per month.

    Good Luck!

    Hi Louise,

Finding a good seo company is sometimes similar to playing the lottery. So be prepared for this and don't get discouraged. You will have to go through a lot of people to find the ones that know what they're doing. And preferably don't charge an arm and a leg for their services.

Since you have an ecommerce store what I would recommend is some solid link building techniques. Don't mess with profile backlinks, blog comments, spinned articles and stuff like that. Some ideas to get you started:

    • put a blog up and start interlinking from the blog posts to the specific product pages that you want to rank for. Internal linking is one of the most overlooked strategies that I see out there
    • create a lot of content on how to match your handbags, how to choose your handbags or any other how to related to handbags
    • do a linkbait around bags - for example: 3 Handbag Types That No Woman Can Live Without
    • contact blog owners in the handbags niche and offer to do guest posts for them
    • go to one of the freelancer sites and have a widget created for you. something like " I love shopping with handbagfairy" . Then put up a flyer inside every product that you ship. It should say something like, "If you liked shopping with us and have an website, we would love if you could put a small logo showing us your support. the logo can be found at siteaddress/logo"
    • contact your suppliers, the ones where you're getting your products from and ask them for a link back
    • find some directories for shopping sites and get listed

These should get you started. Hope it helps.

    Hi Everyone

Thanks so much for your replies, all have been so helpful.

@ Alex - thanks for the tips they are all great. I have been trying to make time for slowly building the site but due t the fact that we have an offline aspect to our bisiness it is so hard time wise. Thats why I would love to have someone working at it on a more regular basis - if you're in the market let me know!

    @ everyone else - THANKYOU !

Im so glad I found this forum. It has been invaluable.
