Keep adding content and get a bunch of backlinks - or at least a few with really good juice.

There is no easy answer without analysing the top 5 sites its very difficult to say. You have obviously done something right to get to #7 so keep doing what you have been doing and you will get there in the end.

If you want me to look at the competition for you shoot me a pm with the keyword and i will be able to advice you further after looking at the competing properties.

    Regards

    Danny

Obviously getting more back links is the way to go, but unless you know what your competition has you are really shooting in the dark.

I mean what if the top 3 pages all have hundreds of thousands of high PR backlinks? Can you beat them? Would you want to take the time to try or would you rather spend your time on another project?

I always find it is best to analyze the competition with something like seospyglass or linkdiagnosis.com so that you can make an educated guess as to what you will need to beat them. Take a look at all their backlinks and see if you can get links from the same pages.

Download the SEO Quake addon for firefox, and search for a keyword you would like to have backlinks for. Then, push the down arrow on SEO Quake to sort the PR of the sites from highest to lowest. See if you can comment on high PR websites with this method.

Too many people assume that all you need to beat the competition is get more backlinks than them; unfortunatly it isn't that easy.

A website with 10 high quality backlinks will still outrank a similar website with 500 crappy links.

First thing to do if your competition has less links but is outranking you is to go ahead and try and get their most powerful links.

If you can't get the same links they have it doesn't mean that they are unbeatable - just keep building links consistently and it will pay of in the end.

Just remember - Quality over quantity all the time! There is a lot more to beating the competition than just getting more backlinks than them.

        Best of luck

        Danny

Get more keyword anchored backlinks pointing to the page of your site that is ranking. I assume it's the home page.

Hey Trent, actually it's not my homepage that is ranking high it's just of of my pages. However, I have more backlinks than all the sites above me, what am I not doing right? and none of the sites above me are using the keyword in their anchor text backlinks

As Danny said above it could be that they links they have are on higher PR/more relevant pages.

It could also be site size, domain age etc etc. For many niche's there isn't a huge amount of difference between ranking #7 and #1. Sounds like it is just a matter of time before you get there.

would help if we could see the url and the keyword you are looking for. without it it's impossible for anyone to analyse the competition you are dealing with. i would help if i could but i can't and won't give advice on this stuff without any information. Because if i tried to, i would probably be way off base.

and i have position 7 and want to boost to 1 as well, my situation is identical but I bet the circumstances keeping me in 7 and the ones keeping you in 7 are way different!

I'm a little secure and uptight about giving out my keywords. Does having more content counts in seo? Or better content than my competitors?

It does factor into the algo, and if you have incentive for Googlebot to come back (frequently releasing content) and more indexed pages can help reach that "authority status" quicker!

DannyP_uk is spot on too, "Quality over quantity all the time! There is a lot more to beating the competition than just getting more backlinks than them."

Use your competitors sites to find high PR back links. Then manually scrape the top SERP pages for other sites who may be willing to (one way or another) give you links.

Better content will get you more sales, I would think. so you could make the most out of fewer visits, if your site sells something. as for SEO, I have observed that onsite is very little of a factor. As long as your site is authentic, and not a total wreck, one seems as good as another in terms of onsite factors.

Add these types of links in a organized fashion, meaning every Monday add a number of these types of links - Profile links, social bookmarks, directory links, and if you can RSS links. If you can create video's of your niche go ahead and do so and post to the well known video sites.

If you do this weekly you will rank higher and higher. RSS links, based on my experience do have a tendency to "sticky" my sites in positions 1-3, that's why I recommend those.

Lather, rinse, repeat. You must have done spomething right to get to #7. Keep doing it. Get some content out there in either articles, or blog posts, and then go promote it. Add some link building, and you should help yourself move up. The key word is repeat. Keep going. It's not a sprint, but a marathon.

The earlier comments had it right when they said you need to know your competition. Any comments like ' just get this or that keywords and you will beat the competition just cannot be true if the specific keywords and competition is not known.

Download market samurai (free trial). watch the videos on how to use it. Use the SEO competition module to analyse the top 10 results for your keyword.
Use the back link PR and Anchor text analysis to find out what links they have.

You can also look at other factors that will come into play like total backlinks to the domain, domain age, Yahoo and Dmoz directory listings and of course on page optimization.

It can be very hard to push out long established sites with lots of domain backlinks. If your trying to compete against say Amazon or other major companies with a huge index of pages and then there's Wiki and the like.

Basically you need to do some proper analysis so you can make an educated decision on what (and how much) you need to do get higher up the search results.

You should consider the search volumes/visitors you are getting for teh keyword in question though. At position 7 you probably will not see much improvemnt in traffic until position 3. If you are only getting a few visitors a day it may be worth looking at higher search volume keywords and putting your effort there. Especially if you analyse the competition first.

  • If you have reached the first page and #7 then the fight will get all the more fierce. At this stage the difference would most probably be the back links. So check your competitors’ back links count and Alexa ranking. This will give you more insights.

Check competitor's site and their backlinks. Try to get backlinks from those sites. Continue backlink work.
