Of course you can, forum posting is great so long as your main intention is to participate in the discussion and add value and not just to get a back link.

Participate and contribute to communities in your niche and you will also get traffic as well as a back link.

Your link will normally be picked up very quickly but can take a while for it to appear in yahoo site explorer.

Yes backlinks from forums count. As far as when they will be indexed, it really depends on the forum, and he forums popularity in Google's eyes.

They do count, of course. You should not ask "how long does it take for Google to show up backlinks for my site". Instead: "how long does it take for Google to take those backlinks into account?".

Answering to the last one: depending on a forum popularity. High popular forums may bring you the backlinks cached within 2-3 days.

Could someone please explain to me how they actually help?

Take this page here at Warrier Forum. It will probably never get above of PR of 0 and will easily have over 100 links it. These links include the top and bottom navigation links, the tags links, the forum links, the breadcrumb links, the thread links, the post links, the profile links, other signature links, etc etc. The more posts in the thread, the more links there will be.

Could someone please explain how a link on a PR0 page when that PR has to be divided by >100 other links actually passes any link juice of value?

Also, just because a link shows up in the Google backlink sample does not mean it is actually passing any link juice.

    Remember this from SEOMOZ:
I remember a site clinic several years back featuring a Google’s webspam chief, Matt Cutts. He was reviewing a site’s link profile on stage using an internal tool and commented that while Google saw several hundred links to the site, only three (yes 3 out of hundreds!) were passing link equity. Cearly, the search giant does a tremendous amount of filtering on the web’s link graph, so don’t presume to be sure which links are passing value.

Sure, links on internal pages don't pass huge amounts of link juice, but participating in communities within your niche can bring plenty of click through traffic as well as advertising your brand and increasing your authority in your niche.

If you go posting on hundreds of forums with only 1 or 2 posts on each they are highly unlikely to bring you any value, find a small handful of very active, large forums / blogs in your niche and participate in them as often as possible and you will benefit from those links in one way or another.

Exactly. The OP was asking about backlinks

Do not take some quotes from some trusteed sites as a Word from God's mouth, think on your own.

The problem with many OBLs on page does actually exist, indeed. Still, your link will be taken into account if the forum, where you post links on, is of a high quality.
So answer the question and explain how they actually help.

My point really is is that if you post in forums with the intention of getting backlinks, you are better of spending that time getting linksin other ways.

        .
        Easily.

        1. PR does not mean much. So your links from PR0 are still the links with value coefficient == 1, hypothetically.
        2. Even from pages with 50 OBLs, you get a link juice == 1/50 == 0.02.
        3. Finally, 0.02 hypothetical value on a high quality forum means more than 1.00 value from spammy blogs, spammy forums and spammy article submission directories all together.

Dear warriors, can you explain more detail about statement no.3? TIA

    Hi leighla,

Forum posting for backlinks works. In fact, it does not need to be dofollow. Even nofollow links from forums have some value.

If you want your links to get indexed faster, then it will help to ping the pages where you have created a post. You can use free services like pingler.com.

    Hope that helps,

    Aira

Yes agreed. Keep in mind a link is always a link. Said that, the only thing that would matter is the link juice that it generates. It depends on number of outbound links on the linking page, if linking page is keyword related and the PR also matters if you are thinking of PR sculpting.

How long does it take, from a few days to never.

One forum that I'am a member of, I have around 500 post with signature links. Because of the lack of optimization by the forum owner, lack of tags, lack of deep inner links,,, and other issues, google has only indexed around 1,200 - 1,500 of the 75,000 threads that the forum has. And this is a 7+ year old site.

Out of those 75,000 threads, around 72,000 - 73,500 have not been indexed. So if you have a link in one of those un-indexed threads, the link is not going to be found.

Some of my links in that forum are 4+ years old, and have yet to be found by google.

Forum posting can be a little hit and miss. You do not want to be posting in a forum that is having problems getting indexed by the search engines.

I'm going to answer yes, but for fear of promoting spam, I am not going to say how.
