60 to 0 in 10 hours! What the heck happened?

Hello,

I was wondering if someone can please tell me how it is possible to go from 60 backlinks for a new site to 0 overnight? At least according to Yahoo Site Explorer and the backlink checking sites I visited and Market Samurai. Oddly though, Google Webmasters has shown an increase from 3 to 9 links overnight.

The only thing I did was a comment on 2 high ranking relevant blogs (pr4 and 5) and once the comments were approved, I pinged them using Pingler.

Was this a mistake? What's the deal or perhaps yahoo is updating?

Backlinking is annoying with the lack of consistent information from the sources that are suposed to tell you what backlinks you have.

On a related not, does Blogger auto ping? I noticed I pinged my blogger feeder site for the first time last night and google webmaster finally shows the links today. Should I ping my articles as well on ezine, goarticles, hubpages, worpdress.com(although they auto ping I think as my self hosted wordpress blog does)etc or will google know it is me due to my ip address?
Is that info passed on through pinging?

Thanks.

I have found that the yahoo links are always changing around, I wouldn't really go by them. Have you looked at the links themselves and checked that the sites are still up, and indexed?

Groovy is right. The results shown in tools from yahoo and google are not accurate or is incomplete. They really don't like to show you the whole picture. If they do, a lot of people would flock to their tools in hopes of searching for backlinks from competitors.

Thanks everyone. Quick question then. Is there any danger in pinging all the sites I comment on in the same day? For example, say I post responses to 20 blogs today with backlinks, is it ok to ping all those sites today or should I wait and do a few each day? I ask because I am not sure if Google can somehow track my IP when pinging or will become suspicious that all of a sudden 20 sites were pinged and now have links to my site? Thanks again.

If I were you I would concentrate on submitting backlinks and never checking on them because the counts are NEVER accurate with those sites.

Words of wisdom right there. You are going through the Google dance ... just close your eyes and plug away with backlinking.

I agree with Matt. In fact, I would not post on any blogs with the thought to increase the PR of your website. Post on good blogs to get traffic to your site from the blog link. Thus, post good and interesting replies. Simple rule: don't try to fool Google.

Totally agree with the above. What counts is where your site ranks. If your links disappeared and your site rank doesn't change, who cares?

Some people say its better to let your links be found naturally............personally I ping the crap at of my links.....and I haven't seen anything detrimental because of it so far............heck I create RSS feeds of all the urls my links are on...........ping the feeds and blast them up to a couple dozen RSS aggregators............again no noticeable detriment found so far.

Interesting. What do you mean by "heck I create RSS feeds of all the urls my links are on"? Isn't there only one feed per site? For example, a wordpress site would be site(dot)com/feed. Can you ping the feed by simply entering it into the pinging sites? That's something I hadn't thought about.

Go to hostmyrss [dot] com. Sign up.......its free..........you'll be able to mash together as many urls as you want and create an RSS feed for the bunch, then just submit the rss url to rss aggregators and to pingler and you're done.........it helps with getting you backlinks indexed faster.

        Cheers

Very cool, thanks. Does it make a difference if these combined feeds have already been submitted on their own?
