Competing Against Vendor keywords

If a vendor, that you are promoting, dominates a certain keyword, is it worth it to try to rank for that keyword?

Say if Acme Widgets allows you to be an affiliate for Acme widget, would it make sense to be even in the top 3 ranking of "Acme widget" for google? Wouldn't any surfer pick the vendor's website over yours?

Not necessarily. You could get reviews, specials, and tutorial pages ranking next to them which might obtain some traffic. Would be easier to tell you knowing the industry.

I suppose if they have a coupon or sale, it would work. I guess the key is to offer a value that's not on their website. Too bad they don't offer any coupons at the moment.

Well, perhaps you could offer something free (promo product) with the "sale" package and still retail for the original list price. That way it really is a "special" or "promo" and reviews too! Testimonials, reviews, additional resources, etc.
