Best Way to Use Keyword in Domain Name for Ranking

These aren't my actual keywords but lets say that, as an example, I have a choice of ranking for 2 different keywords...

"how to get over a boyfriend" => 33k searches a month
"get over a boyfriend" => 22k searches a month

Would it be better to purchase a domain name with...

"howtogetoverboyfriend.net"
"get-over-a-boyfriend.com"

Which keyword would you prefer to go after and which domain name would you choose to rank with the keyword you choose?

Is leaving out the "a" in the first example okay or would it be better to leave out the how to and have the "a" so only the front is missing.

I don't know if having the keyword in the domain name is an advantage if it's not exact, and if its not, what's the next best way to use it to your advantage or if it's not exact it doesn't make much of a difference?

Would really appreciate someone's advice on this.

Keyword in domain will help you rank better for that particular keyword. You may need to check your competition too and not just the searches. Knowing who is on page 1 and if you will beat them ( and how soon) will help you decide which is better.

Yeah. That's why we have amazon, monster, yelp, zillow, icanhazcheezburger,...

You never know if you will beat any site. You cannot force google to like you.
You cannot judge a site by looks and think, oh I can beat that. You never know
how authoritative google thinks the site is. There is no formula you can follow
and say to google, "There, I did it, now rank me #1." You may never even be on
      the first page.

I would keep all the words in the keyword when buying a domain name, so for example if the keyword is "how to lose weight", i would buy the exact domain name, HowToLoseWeight we help normal people lose weight with community., not missing out any words from the keywords, because thats what people are typing in the search box

As HCLee mentioned, you should also look at competition, try typing allintitle:KEYWORD for a more acurate competition figure, so in this example type allintitle:how to lose weight

Also, buy .com .net or .org if possible

Keywords in domain give a nice ranking boost for that particular keyword. I can't see how anyone can argue this?

Of course, the positive effect is negligble if your competition is strong.

    Thanks mritunjays82

I agree with EVERYTHING that mritunjays82 says. The days of spam domains, poor content and no inbound links like googlesniper sites are far behind us. Unless there is zero competition the keyword in domain will have only two factors.

In the results part of the domain name would be bold and the other the inbound links using the domain names as anchor text.

The site iArticles.org my favorite article directory at the moment ranks nowhere for articles in Google. But the in url names of the articles, due to the removal of the category, and the in domain % for the keywords, combined with on page SEO gives you the scores.

But this has been this way for a while now. Gone are the days when the top ten looked like this:

    keyword.com
    keyword.net
    mykeyword.com
    ikeyword.com
    keywords.net
    my-keyword.com
    goodkeywords.com
    keyword.org
    whykeyword.com
    i-keyword.com

Great thread, and one that keeps coming up again and again.
