What is the most effective way to do Title Tags?

Hi,

I picked up a book SEO For 2010:Search Engine Optimization by Sean Odom and he had a sample where he formatted the title tag like this:

keyword 1 | keyword 2 | keyword 3 | keyword 4 | keyword 5

Yet when I look at most search engine results, I don't really see this type of formatting.

Is this effective or is it better to do a more descriptive title tag?

Thanks

    Keyword 1 & Keyword 2 | Company Name

this was the general consensus, at least it was a few months back, and I suppose it depends on keywords/company name, but it is still being used successfully by many.

The title should be exactly what your page is about.

Do visitors know what your page is about?

    I'd go for:
    Business name-keyword phrase summary

The main page of this forum is a good example:
    WarriorForum - Internet Marketing Forums

Your title should be short and informative, devoid of unneeded keywords.

Your sub pages can me more succinct, but it still should readily tell
the visitor what the page is about.

The further you get from the first word, the less the search engines pay attention. Also, if you don't have your company name in your title, you are missing out on SEO opportunities for people who are actually searching for YOU! Imagine if your competitors optimised for your brand name!

    I would agree with Brad, best practice should be;
    Keyword 1 & Keyword 2 | Company Name
