Follow & NoFollow Question

Hello,

I am new to this whole NoFollow / Follow thing and have a question.

I am using FireFox's NoDoFollow add-on to highlight the dofollow and nofollow links. I went to a blog that was showing as a DoFollow so I posted on there blog. But my link back to my site showed up as a NoFollow.

What am I missing here?

Thanks!

Simply put, you can change the rel="follow" tags for every aspect of any page. That means, that while the blog or website might be "do follow," the comments are probably set to "no follow" to try and reduce spam. I have my website set up this way, and I think most blog sites automatically set the rule to no follow for comments as well.

So does this mean that Google will not look at it for back link juice?

Well it really depends, and I can be absolutely wrong about the particular blog you are talking about.

However, in terms of backlink juice, lets put it this way: if I bookmark something on Delicious, it is a no-follow link, yet it still counts as a backlink. Therefore, I think you'd be fine for the following reason:

If the page is do-follow, all links on the page should be indexed - whether the module is specifically allowing a do-follow rule or not.

Personally, I wouldn't look too much into the difference between follow and no-follow. Follow is always better, but no-follow is still good (just not as good).

Don’t worry about if a blog is has the "rel=nofollow" tag associated with it links. For one it will drastically slow down your link building efforts looking for the tag on every blog. Second you should be much more concerned with driving more traffic to your site. If you approach your blog commenting/link building from this approach you will natural acquire some good backlinks and increase your traffic.

But to answer your question directly: most bloggers (including myself) do not allow comments to pass along pr. It would make the blog less attractive when it comes to trading links with other people. Why would someone trade links with you if they could simply post a comment and get an instant one-way backlink? So I’m thinking that this is what you where seeing.

I've found the quickest way to check if a site has nofollow tags is to use an add-on like SeoQuake that allows me to see the website code then do a quick ctrl+f and search for "nofollow". You are very right about not worrying about it when it comes to blogs though, it's more useful to look for nofollow tags on sites you're using for just a backlink (like social bookmarking where people are unlikely to actually see your link).

You will find a lot of different views on Do Follow vs No Follow. I think they all do count, but Do Follows maybe count as a higher/more important "vote" for your site. Personally, in my SEO efforts I go with mostly Do Follows but also include a good bit of No Follows too. I like to keep my SEO looking as natural as possible in every aspect. It seems to work out for me.

Juts my opinion anyway, hope that helps!

People spend too much time worrying about NOFOLLOW vs DOFOLLOW. Don't worry too much about that, just build your links.
