How Top Site with 100,000 Page Avoid Duplicate Content

I'm hoping some of you savy marketers can help me understand this. I see many shoping sites like target, walmart, amazon and such have sooo many similuar pages but don't get slapped with duplicate content.

For example:
Red shoes
Blue shoes

Content is pretty much the same on each page except for color for example.

They could have hundreds of these pages. How do they avoid the duplicate content?

Is it because they target a diffrent index with keywords tags, title, description, or what?

Please help me here.

    Amazon product pages are usually the ones that turn up in the SERPs, not the category pages which may have duplicate content.

    Don't be afraid from duplicate content + sites that big don't care as much about google and if they do they don't need to promote and index 100k pages, believe me that 50 is too much!

    JayGreen, I have a site with 200 000 pages in Google index, and can open you little secrets if you want.
    For each page slightly differentiating in the content (red shoes among all color shoes):
    - Add brief description of all red shoes you have (unique content)
    - Add some generic words in a footer about red shoes (unique content)
    - Make a section with rotating content about shoes in general (almost unique content)
    So you will get quite a lot of unique content for each color of shoes. Its will be not duplicate page anymore.

    Finally and most importantly: make links from some inner pages related to shoes to the page about read shoes. You'll get your page in index then.
